Need help paying for your energy bills?


If you, or someone you know, are struggling to pay for you gas and electricity bills, some of the schemes available on this page may be able to help you out. Through a variety of sources, including the government and many energy supplier funds, you may be eligible for support, including debt clearance, efficiency improvement and temporal contributions. Below is a brief summary of each scheme with a link to find out more.


Cold Weather Payment Scheme

Summary
If the average temperature in your area is recorded as, or forecast to be, zero degrees celcius or below for 7 consecutive days, you may be able to recieve £25 towards your energy costs for each seven day period.

Eligibility
You need to receive one of the following:

  • Pension Credit
  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseeker's Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Universal Credit

Winter Fuel Payment

Summary
You could recieve between £100-£300 tax free from the government towards your winter energy bills.

Eligibility
You need to have been:

  • Born on or before 5th May 1953
  • Living in the UK throughout the week of 19th-25th September 2016

Energy Company Obligation (ECO)

Summary
Initiative overseen by Ofgem that can help you improve the insulation or boiler in your home. You may also be able to get other improvements towards your heating.

Eligibility
You must own or privately rent a property (and have the landlord/lady's permission) and receive one of the following benefits:

  • Pension Credit
  • Child Tax Credit (and have an income of £16,010 or less)
  • Working Tax Credit (and have an income of £16,010 or less)
  • Income Support
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Universal Credit (and you earned £1,250 or less after tax in any assessment period in the last 12 months)
