How much do your energy bills cost?

The answer to this question relies on a number of variables, all leading to the likely amount you're going to spend on your bills. You're pretty much in control of how much you want to spend, given you're the ones using the gas and electricity. The main factors are: how big your house is; how many people live in it; and how savvy you are about turning things off etc. The average three bedroom student house is likely to use between 1,000 - 1,400 kWh of gas and 300 - 500 kWh of electricity per month. We understand this may not make much sense to you, so here it is in pounds and pence.

If you're on a standard deal with Co-operative Energy, for example, which is the type your landlord most likely has you on, will cost you around:

Monthly usage:
Gas - 1,312 kWh
Electricity - 465 kWh

Co-operative Energy Cardiff University energy bills

Monthly cost:
Gas - £64
Elec - £85
____

Total - £149

(£49.66 each per month)

Now, if you decide to spend 10 minutes on the phone to us today, you could switch to a deal something like the one below:

SSE Cardiff University energy bills

Tariff: SSE's 'SSE 1 Year Fixed v11'

Monthly cost:
Gas - £40
Elec - £66
____

Total - £106

(£35.33 each per month)

By just switching your energy tariff, you could save yourselves £43 a month. Over the year this will save you a massive £516.

Avoid estimated bills

Your energy supplier is only legally obligated to come and read your gas and electricity meters every two years, which means that the rest of the time you are going to be charged based on an 'estimated figure', which is always inflated with students because they know they can get away with it. To counteract this, you can send them a meter reading every month, or even just every now and again (you'll still save money). This will take you around 1 minute: it basically consists of you copying 4 or 5 numbers from your meter and posting it online for you energy supplier. You can find out how to do this for different meter types by clicking the link below.
