How much do your energy bills cost?

The answer to this question relies on a number of variables, all leading to the likely amount you're going to spend on your bills. You're pretty much in control of how much you want to spend, given you're the ones using the gas and electricity. The main factors are: how big your house is; how many people live in it; and how savvy you are about turning things off etc. The average three bedroom student house is likely to use between 1,000 - 1,400 kWh of gas and 300 - 500 kWh of electricity per month. We understand this may not make much sense to you, so here it is in pounds and pence.

If you're on a standard deal with SSE, for example, which is the type your landlord most likely has you on, will cost you around:

Monthly usage:
Gas - 1,312 kWh
Electricity - 465 kWh

Monthly cost:
Gas - £62
Elec - £83
____

Total - £145

(£48.33 each per month)

Now, if you decide to spend 10 minutes on the phone to us today, you could switch to a deal something like the one below:

Tariff: Npower's 'Online Price Fix July 2018'

Monthly cost:
Gas - £43
Elec - £64
____

Total - £107

(£35.66 each per month)

This £38 a month saving in your household could really make a differece between three students. For just one quick switch you'd save up to around £456 per year.

Avoid estimated bills

We all know that thinking about your energy bills is not what you're going to want to do no matter what day of the week, we're all the same. That said, this is something you may want to get into the habit of doing if you do really want to save some money. Your energy supplier is only legally obligated to come to your property and check your gas and electricity meters once every two years, which means the rest of the time you're getting charged a completely 'estimated' amount, which is usually much higher than what you're using. This can be solved by about 90 seconds every month or even every once in a while. You can find out how you submit a meter reading by clicking on the link below:
