Guernsey Electricity: latest tariffs & company contact

min reading

Guernsey Electricity is the sole electricity provider and distributor for the bailiwick of Guernsey. Importing most of its energy from France, the supplier is determined to provide electricity that comes from renewable sources to both domestic and business customers. Read on to find out what more the provider can do for you.

About Guernsey Electricity

Electricity arrived in Guernsey in the late 1800s for just a limited number of consumers. The Guernsey Electric Light & Power Company launched in 1907, and it changed its name to Guernsey Electricity in 1993. The company now provides electricity to just over 300,000 island residents.

While the company used to generate all of its electricity locally at the Vale Power Station, Guernsey Electricity began to import electricity from the European Grid through an undersea cable that links Guernsey to France via Jersey in November 2000.

The cable is run by the Channel Islands Electricity Grid, which plans to build another undersea cable that will connect the island directly to the French grid in the near future.

The provider now imports more than 90% of the Island’s electricity. Guernsey previously imported electricity from a mix of nuclear and hydroelectric sources. However, since January 2020, 100% of this imported electricity comes from renewable and low-carbon sources, like wind, solar, and hydroelectric power stations.

The Vale Power Station on the island relies on residual fuel oil (a low-value petroleum product) and Diesel. It is only used for emergency generation when the imported power can not meet the demand of the Island.

Tariffs and prices

Guernsey Electricity offers a range of domestic and business tariffs for its customers. We have broken down the tariffs so that you can decide which works best for you.

All electricity bills are paid on a quarterly basis by default; however, customers can arrange to be billed on a monthly basis. You will need to contact Guernsey Electricity to request this type of payment.

Not sure what tariff you are on with Guernsey Electricity? You can find this information on your latest bill under where it says Transaction Type.

Standard Domestic tariff

Domestic Super Economy 12 tariff

Households on the Domestic Super Economy 12 tariff are charged two different rates for electricity consumption. The low rate is applied for 10 hours at night, when usage is generally low, and for two hours during the day. A higher unit rate is applied for the remaining 12 hours during the day.

For information concerning what times the discounted rates are available, call Guernsey Electricity at 200700, and select option four.

This tariff is ideal for customers with storage heaters. These heaters would collect the energy at night when electricity is cheaper, and then release it during the day.
