About

Who is Smartest Energy?

Smartest Energy was established in 2001 as an aggregator of independent generation projects and entered the UK supply market in 2008. Today it claims to be the leading purchaser of independent energy generation, counting Toyota Manufacturing UK, John Lewis Partnership and JLL among its customers. Its business supply division, previously known as Dual Energy, supplies electricity and gas to small and medium-sized enterprises with fixed and variable contracts, renewable options, smart meters and energy-data access.

Registered as SmartestEnergy Business Limited, Smartest Energy uses this legal name for Ofgem licence filings, B2B contracts and any formal communications. The trading name customers see on invoices is the shorter, recognisable form.

The company is headquartered in Worthing, West Sussex, where it runs its commercial operations, account management and regulatory liaison with Ofgem.

Smartest Energy was established in 2001. A longer track record means more years operating under Ofgem rules and a wider history of business-customer relationships.

Smartest Energy operates independently,it is not part of a larger corporate group. Independent B2B suppliers often quote tighter margins than the Big Six but carry less wholesale-market scale.

The company is regulated by Ofgem, and complaints fall under the Energy Ombudsman alternative dispute resolution scheme, but only for microbusinesses with under 10 staff and under £2m turnover. Larger I&C customers must take complaints through commercial dispute resolution.

Review

Smartest Energy,pros and cons

Smartest Energy offers a useful range of fixed and tracker contracts plus a rare SME prepay option, and customer-service responsiveness is a clear strength. The fuel mix and Citizens Advice ranking are weaker than the marketing suggests, so SMEs prioritising renewables should benchmark against a fully green B2B supplier before signing a multi-year deal.

Strengths

  • Trustpilot score around 4.3/5 across nearly 500 reviews; 70% rated "Excellent".
  • Customer service team consistently praised in positive reviews, with named staff thanked by customers.
  • Wide product range: SmartFix (1, 2, 3 or 5 year fix), SmartTracker (matched price reviews) and SmartPay (prepay).
  • Free smart meter installation for business electricity customers.
  • Budget Plan payment spreads cost in equal monthly Direct Debit instalments.
  • Web Analyser service gives half-hourly consumption breakdowns with daily, weekly and monthly reports.

Watch-outs

  • About 22% of Trustpilot reviews are "poor" or "bad", citing incorrect meter readings, hidden charges, sudden price hikes and switching difficulties.
  • Citizens Advice ranked Smartest Energy 14th out of 17 business suppliers in its Q4 2020 performance report.
  • Fuel mix is broadly aligned with the UK national average rather than majority-renewable, despite the supplier's positioning around clean generation.
  • No mobile app — the SmartWeb portal is desktop only.

Renewables

Smartest Energy green credentials

Smartest Energy claims to be the UK's leading purchaser of independent renewable generation, but the published business-division fuel mix is in line with the UK average (about 38% renewables) rather than majority-renewable.

Common questions

Smartest Energy,frequently asked questions

Smartest Energy is regulated by Ofgem under a non-domestic supply licence. Whether it suits your business depends on your annual consumption, contract term and whether you need extra services (HHM, green certification, smart-meter rollout). Always compare delivered p/kWh including VAT and CCL before signing.

Switching takes between three weeks and two months for a business contract, longer than the domestic five-working-day rule. Smartest Energy will run a credit check, request your annual consumption and a recent meter reading, and arrange the transfer with your current supplier. Supply is never interrupted during the switch.

SmartFix (1, 2, 3 or 5 years); SmartTracker (3 years); SmartPay (prepay, 1-3 years)

Most UK fixed-term business contracts include termination fees if you switch mid-contract. The supplier must accept your renewal notice in the final 30 to 60 days before the contract end-date (the renewal window varies by supplier and is set out in the original contract). Outside that window you are tied in unless you pay the exit charge.

You can reach Smartest Energy on 01903 703400, Mon-Fri 8.30am-5pm. For a full breakdown of phone lines (sales, emergency, complaints, meter readings, account moves), see the Smartest Energy contact page.
