Smartest Energy customer reviews
We looked at Smartest Energy reviews online to see what real customers had to say about their supplier, both under its previous name of Dual Energy and in its current guise.
At the time of writing, Smartest Energy had received almost 500 reviews on consumer review site Trustpilot, achieving an average score of 4.3 out of a possible 5 stars. The majority of these Smartest Energy reviews were positive, with 70% rating the supplier as ‘Excellent’ - the highest possible score available on the site - and a further 6% rating it ‘Good’. The most common source of customer satisfaction appears to be its customer services team, with a number of its staff referenced by name throughout the positive Smartest Energy reviews on Trustpilot.
Of all the energy companies we have dealt with over the years, this is, by far, the easiest to deal with-- easy to speak directly with someone, prompt responses to queries, good selection of options and a friendly, helpful manner. Would recommend to anyone.
Mr M Macaskill, Trustpilot
In contrast, 2% of customers give it a ‘poor' rating, while another 20% score it the lowest possible rating of ‘bad’. The following were the most common causes of customer dissatisfaction in negative Smartest Energy reviews:
- Incorrect meter readings
- Hidden charges and admin fees
- Steep price increases
- Difficulty in transferring away from Smartest Energy to another supplier
I have a smart meter yet still they are taking estimate readings. Earlier in the year, my bill jumped from £300 a month to £900!! They said it was because they hadn't taken an actual reading. That's the whole point of a smart meter! Made me struggle financially. Will move as soon as my contract is up.
Gill Norval, Trustpilot
Perhaps unsurprisingly, given the number of negative Smartest Energy reviews left by its customers, Citizens Advice ranked the supplier 14th out of 17 business providers in its October to December 2020 performance report.
While Smartest Energy outperformed Scottish Power, it fell short of all the other Big Six energy suppliers, including British Gas, EON and Npower.

Deemed and Out of Contract Rates
Out of contract rates are usually imposed when a business’ energy contract expires without agreeing to a new tariff, while deemed rates are applied to business customers who move into a building where Smartest Energy is already the supplier.
With Smartest Energy, gas and electricity supplied to customers in either situation is charged at the supplier's standard tariff. You can find the rates for this in the table below.
Meter Profile | Standing Charge | Unit Rate |
---|---|---|
Electricity 03 - 04 | 109p per day | 30.4p per kWh |
Electricity 00, 05 - 08 | 279p per day | 30.4p per kWh |
Gas | 84p per day | 6.2p per kWh |
Prices correct as of June 2021. Rates in the table above exclude Climate Change Levy, VAT and any other applicable taxes.
If you find yourself on deemed or out of contract rates, we recommend switching suppliers or agreeing to a new plan with Smartest Energy as soon as possible as these rates are far more expensive than many other options on the market. Fuel mix
All energy suppliers are required by Ofgem to disclose their fuel mix, to show where their electricity comes from. This helps businesses make an informed decision about their energy choices.
While Smartest Energy claims to be the UK’s leading supplier of renewable electricity, It doesn’t currently provide the overall fuel mix for its business division on its website. Instead, it states that it is ‘in line with the UK national average’ for the period covering 1 April 2019 to 31 March 2020.
If we are to take this at face value, then Smartest Energy’s primary source is natural gas, which accounts for 39.4% of its electricity outputs. Renewables, including wind, solar and hydro, came in second at 37.9%, followed by nuclear at 16.6%, coal at 3.9% and ‘other’ at 2.2%.
*Relates to electricity supplied in the period April 2019 to March 2020.

Our verdict
Smartest Energy offers a good range of flexible and fixed tariffs, so businesses have a lot of choice depending on their needs and budget. It also provides several extra services, such as free smart meter installation and its Web Analyser service.
However, we noticed some red flags in online reviews of the supplier, such as steep price hikes and difficulties in switching away from Smartest Energy to another business energy provider.
Furthermore, we were disappointed not to see a higher percentage of renewable energy in the electricity makeup of Smartest Energy’s business division, despite the supplier putting an emphasis on strong in much of its promotional material.
Overall, we give Smartest Energy a score of 2 out of 5 stars. Want to find a better energy deal for your business? You could save an average £1,305* on your business energy by switching with Selectra. Speak to an energy expert today on 020 3318 3633 or get a free personalised quote now.
Selectra Score: ★★
