About Yu Energy

Formerly known as Better Business Energy, Midlands-based Yu Energy was rebranded in 2014 and is currently one of the fastest-growing business energy suppliers in the UK.

Offering a selection of fixed-price commercial utility plans, including gas, electricity and water, Yu Energy supplies around 18,000 businesses across the UK. These range from manufacturing sites and retail outlets through to sporting venues such as Trent Bridge Cricket Ground in Nottingham and Bolton Wanderers Football Club. In recent years, Yu Energy has boosted its customer base by taking on business accounts from both Bristol Energy and Flogas Energy.

As well as its standard business energy plans, Yu Energy also offers a 100% clean electricity option, smart meters, EV charge points and commercial meter installation.

Yu Energy tariffs and plans

Yu Energy offers a range of fixed and competitively priced tariffs and energy management plans for all types of enterprises, from micro businesses and SMEs to larger corporations based on both single and multiple sites.

Small and medium business energy tariffs

Gas flame and light bulb

Yu Energy customers with small or medium-sized businesses can choose from electricity-only, gas-only or multi-fuel contracts for their utility supplies. These include both fixed and prepayment options.

  1. Yu Energy Fix: Yu Energy’s Fix tariff locks in the same unit rate and standing charge for the duration of your gas or electricity contract, ensuring your business is safe against any rise in wholesale energy prices.
  2. Yu Energy Pre-Pay: The supplier’s prepayment option is aimed at SMEs which prefer to budget ahead of time and keep an eye on exactly how much they are spending on energy costs. Customers are supplied with a prepayment card for their gas or electricity meter which can be topped up by the required amount ahead of time.

Large business energy plans

For customers with large or multiple sites and annual energy usage of over 500,000 kWh, Yu Energy offers energy portfolio management solutions and bespoke corporate gas, electricity and water supply plans for your own specific business energy Needs.

Yu Energy electricity plans for large businesses

Large business customers with Yu Energy have a choice of both fully fixed and part-fixed electricity plans, depending on your commercial energy requirements. Both provide fixed energy rates, while its part-fixed electricity plans give more flexibility for businesses to manage their own non-commodity costs. Yu Energy’s current electricity plans available to large businesses are as follows:

  1. Yu Energy HH Fix: Yu Energy’s HH Fix electricity tariff offers fixed day and night unit rates and standing charges for half-hourly meters, guaranteeing your business is protected against fluctuations in the wholesale electricity market.
  2. Yu Energy Pass Through: Charges fixed electricity rates, while all other non-commodity charges can vary depending on changes in the market.
  3. Yu Energy Renewable Pass Through: Yu Energy’s large business renewable energy option offers fixed pieces for electricity and most non-commodity costs. However, extra charges related to the Renewables Obligation (RO), Feed-In Tariff (FIT) and Contracts for Difference (CfD) remain variable.
  4. Yu Energy Cost Manager Pass Through: Provides fixed rates for electricity and all non-commodity costs except Capacity Market, Distribution Use of System (DUoS) and Transmission Network Use of System (NUoS) charges.
Does Yu Energy provide 100% renewable energy?

While Yu Energy does not yet supply 100% renewable energy on its tariffs as standard, its Pure Green Energy plan offers a clean electricity option for carbon-conscious businesses of all sizes.

Available as an option on all the above electricity contracts for 12, 24 or 36 months, electricity produced on the Pure Green Energy plan is generated by Carno Wind Farm in Powys, Wales and is certified by Ofgem’s Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REGO) scheme, enabling businesses to demonstrate their green credentials to customers.

In addition to providing 100% clean energy, Yu Energy has also committed to carbon offsetting by making a donation to the World Land Trust Plant a Tree programme for every Pure Green Energy plan sold.

Yu Energy gas plans for large businesses

For large business gas customers, Yu Energy offers just one tariff, its Fully Fixed price plan. Under the tariff, customers pay an agreed fixed unit rate and standing charge agreed throughout the duration of their contract. This protects businesses against any sudden increases in wholesale energy market prices.

Out of contract rates

Businesses moving into premises where Yu Energy is the incumbent supplier or those whose Yu Energy contract has come to an end and are yet to agree to a new deal are automatically placed on ‘out of contract’ rates for gas and electricity. Yu Energy divides these into ‘deemed’ and ‘transition’ energy plans.

Out of contract rates are generally far above what a business supplier will usually charge on a fixed tariff. As such, if you find yourself on these rates, we recommend that you either switch supplier or agree to a new plan with Yu Energy as soon as possible. To find out more about switching your commercial energy, speak to a Selectra business energy expert on 020 3318 3633 or get a free personalised quote now.

Yu Energy Deemed Energy Plans

Deemed rates apply to customers that have moved into premises that are already supplied by Yu Energy. These rates will continue to apply until a customer has either agreed on a new contract with Yu Energy or switched business energy suppliers.

Yu Energy deemed rates for electricity

Yu Energy deemed rates for electricity are determined by meter profile class (PC) and whether you use Half Hourly (HH) or Non-Half Hourly (NHH) metering. Rates for electricity are as follows:

  1. Fixed PPA: For both large and small energy generators. Yu Energy offers a 5-year fixed-price agreement for generators with a capacity of over 1MW and a 1-year purchase plan for generators between 10kW and 1MW, including those that qualify for the Feed-in Tariff.
  2. Variable PPA: For larger generators with a capacity over 1MW. The Yu Energy Variable PPA tracks wholesale energy market prices as they rise and fall. Contracts on this plan are offered for up to 20 years.

4. Renewable and sustainable energy generation support

For businesses considering installing renewable and sustainable energy generating technologies, Yu Energy offers help and assistance on products including solar, ground source heat pumps, biomass, battery storage and combined heat and power (CHP). Yu Energy reviews

Customer review speech bubbles

The vast majority of positive Yu Energy reviews were reserved for its customer service team, while others praised its competitive pricing and ease of both setting up and renewing contracts with the supplier.

Of the Yu Energy reviews that rated the supplier as ‘Bad’, the most common complaints were from customers who received overestimated bills or had issues switching suppliers once their Yu Energy contract had come to an end.

Fuel Mix

Energy suppliers are required to publish their fuel mix on an annual basis to demonstrate to customers exactly how their electricity is generated. This allows customers to make an informed choice on their business energy supply and how this affects their carbon footprint.

While Yu Energy does offer 100% renewable electricity on its Pure Green Electricity plans, its overall output currently relies heavily on fossil fuels such as natural gas and coal to produce its electricity.

According to Yu Energy’s latest fuel mix information, its primary fuel source is natural gas, which makes up 66.63% of the electricity it generates. This is followed by renewables, such as wind and solar, at 15.14%, nuclear at 7.59%, coal at 5.83% and ‘other fuels’ at 4.81%.

Its annual CO2 emissions, meanwhile, are 346.55g per kWh, while it generated 0.007g of radioactive waste per kWh. To put this in context, the average CO2 emissions produced by all UK suppliers is 205g per kWh, while the average radioactive waste is 0.0012g per kWh.

*Relates to electricity supplied in the period April 2019 to March 2020.
UK Average = Coal 3.9%, Natural Gas: 39.4%, Nuclear: 16.6%, Renewable: 37.9%, Other 2.2%.

Yu Energy: the verdict

Yu Energy is a commercial energy supplier offering an impressive range of tariffs and products for businesses of all sizes. Its competitively-priced services enable companies to keep things simple by putting all their utilities and energy management in the hands of just one supplier.

The supplier also appears to have one eye on the future as it gears up its support for sustainable energy generation and electric vehicle infrastructure. It offers a 100% renewable electricity plan, though, in contrast to suppliers such as Pozitive Energy and British Gas Lite, green energy is not yet supplied as standard.

In terms of the overall customer experience, most positive Yu Energy reviews online highlight its competitive pricing and efficient customer service team, while the majority of negative experiences were concerning billing issues and difficulties in switching suppliers once a contract comes to an end.

With such an extensive range of services and predominantly positive customer reviews, we give Yu Energy an overall rating of 3 out of 5 stars.
