Before privatisation in 1990, Bristol's electricity needs were fulfilled by the 'South Western Electricity Board'. After various takeovers, EDF bought the company in 2003 and discontinued the name. In 2010, EDF sold the company to PPL who rebranded it to become 'Western Power Distribution', the current DNO for Bristol.
From 1948, the gas supply in Bristol was supplied by the 'South Western Gas Board'. This ended in 1973 when it became an area of the British Gas Corporation.
