Look at the order. The router is the cheapest always-on thing on the list, at about £22 a year. A fridge-freezer quietly costs £37, a set-top box left in idle can hit £39, and a games console sitting in "instant on" mode burns about £27 doing nothing. If you want the best broadband router electricity cost, the honest answer is: it barely moves. A modern Wi-Fi 6 router might pull 8 watts where an old one pulls 12, a difference of about £9 a year. That is real, but it is not a reason to rush out and buy one. Mesh systems with two or three nodes are the exception: each extra box is another router-sized trickle, so a three-piece mesh can cost roughly three times as much, around £60 a year.
