Every UK gas or electricity bill is built from the same six ingredients. Here is how they stack up.
The price for every kilowatt-hour you use. Set by your tariff, capped by Ofgem if you are on a default plan, and the lever that moves your bill the most.
A flat daily fee charged every day regardless of usage. Covers the cost of running the network and protecting failed-supplier customers.
The kWh figure from your meter readings. If your bill says "estimated", you are paying based on a guess — submit a real read or fit a smart meter to fix it.

Billing FAQ
Even on the same tariff, the bill depends on how much you actually use. Two homes on the same plan with different consumption habits, household size, insulation or appliances can pay very different totals. The first thing to check is the kWh consumed figure on each bill — that, multiplied by the unit rate, drives the lion's share of what you pay.
An estimated reading means your supplier did not have a meter reading for the billing period and worked one out from your usage history. Submit a real reading via your supplier's app or website. If you are owed money back, ask for the credit to be refunded rather than carried forward. Our meter reading guide walks through every UK meter type.
UK domestic gas and electricity bills are charged at a reduced VAT rate of 5%, applied to the combined cost of unit rate, standing charge and any extras like late-payment fees.
No. Ofgem's backbilling rule stops suppliers from charging for energy used more than 12 months earlier if the bill is due to their mistake. If you receive a catch-up bill going back further than that, you can challenge it in writing.
Contact the existing supplier with the previous occupant's name and a meter reading taken on your move-in date. Most suppliers can do this online. The full process, including consent rules for joint accounts and Power of Attorney, is in our change-name guide.
Not always. Some suppliers offer a small paperless discount, others price the same on both. Even where the discount is gone, digital bills make it much easier to spot mistakes, see usage trends and download statements when switching. See the paperless billing guide.
Raise a formal complaint with your supplier first. If you have not received a resolution after eight weeks, or a deadlock letter, you can take it to the Energy Ombudsman. Their decision is binding on the supplier and free to you.
