Standards & Certifications

The organisation develops and publishes technical standards and guidelines for the industry. These guidelines provide a recommended approach to conducting an activity or task as well as establishing crucial procedures and rating criteria for products.

ARI has published over 80 different standards and guidelines over the years, many of which are widely accepted as American National Standards. These standards ensure that products are rated in a uniform manner that consumers can rely on.

The ARI Performance Certified Seal

To earn the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute Performance Certified seal, manufacturers' must have their performance rated using laboratory testing. Manufacturers who participate in the process will have a significant portion of their products tested by an independent laboratory chosen by the organisation.

The products that get tested are selected at random and failing the test leads to re-rating or ceasing production of the failed product.

The Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute has provided financial support to the Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Technology Institute (ARTI) since 1998. ARTI takes on scientific research in the public interest.

The institute also coordinates industry and government in planning research into technologies that will accelerate development of products by manufacturers. They can also be considered a valuable resource to national laboratories, public agencies, and universities on specific research topics.

Product Sections

Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Institute members join product sections. Manufacturers join a product section alongside other manufacturers who market the same types of products. Each product section develops its own product rating standards as well as often developing their own communications, product certification and statistical programs. ARI members can be involved in one or more product sections.
