British Nuclear Fuels Limited (BNFL) was a government-owned nuclear manufacturer and transporter. It was based in Warrington, England and was founded in 1971. In 2010, the company ceased to exist and became completely defunct. It’s successor, Sellafield Ltd., is still in operation today and fills a similar role to that of BNFL.

About BNFL

Set up in 1971, British Nuclear Fuels Limited was formed based from the demerger of UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA). The key point of interest with BNFL was, and still is under different ownership, Sellafield, which is a nuclear site adapted from the original nuclear reactor site, Windscale, which was renamed under BNFL.

The company went through quite expansive growth throughout its existence, with the acquisition of a number of companies, such as Westinghouse Electric Company ($1.1 billion), ABB (£300 million) and Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (Pty) Ltd (22.5% stake).

In April 2005, BNFL went through a rather large restructure, seeing British Nuclear Fuels plc become British Nuclear Group (BNG), having BNFL thereafter operate as a subsidiary of the group. On the 1st of this month, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority also took ownership of all of BNFL’s nuclear sites, including their prized possession, Sellafield.

BNFL’s dissolution

BNFL announced on the 3rd February 2006 than they had agreed to sell BNG America to Envirocare, thereafter forming EnergySolutions. The CEO announced that instead of selling the company off in one fell swoop they would be selling it off piece by piece. After the various sales and dissolutions, the company final came to its end in May 2009, when all the sales from BNFL’s formers businesses had been finalised.
