When do I get the Warm Home Discount?
Warm Home Discount is money off your electricity bills. You will see the discount on your power bill between October 2018 and April 2019. It is worth seeing if you qualify so you can save on your electricity during the coldest time of the year when consumption is highest.
How To Apply for the Warm Home Discount
The Warm Home Discount is a government initiative run in co-operation with a variety of electricity providers. It has been put in place to help people with rising gas and electricity bills during the cold season when energy use goes through the roof.
To apply for the Warm Home Discount, you need to know:
- If your power company participates in the scheme.
- Who the home energy bill payer is.
- Which criteria you fall under to be eligible.
You can call to find out if you qualify for Warm Home Discount and how to save more on your electricity:
You are eligible if on 8 July 2018:
- Your electricity supplier was part of the scheme
- You (or your partner) are the account holder
- You received Guaranteed Pension Credit (This is still the case even if you also get savings credit)
People eligible for the Warm Home Discount fall into one of two groups:
Core Group: Primarily pensioners who receive the Warm Home Discount automatically as the energy suppliers work with the Department of Works and Pensions to find all those that qualify.
Broader Group: Other energy consumers who apply for the Warm Home Discount through their energy supplier. They will have to do this every year because the Warm Home Discount application does not carry over.
Changes to 2018/19 Warm Home Discount The roll out of the upcoming Warm Home Discount has been pushed back to early autumn for many energy companies. The delay comes after the government took extra time in a consultation regarding how the Warm Home Discount should be run this year. While the criteria to get it remain the same, the application windows have not escaped the delays, meaning that getting the Warm Home Discount this year is harder than before.
What happens if you don’t meet the criteria
You are still able to apply directly to your electricity supplier based on alternative criteria:
- You’re on a low income
- You get certain means-tested benefits
Check with your electricity supplier for specific advice regarding your situation.
Below are the energy companies that are currently part of the scheme.

How much is the Warm Home Discount?
The Warm Home Discount will be £140 for 2018/2019. This discount scheme is both for households with standard credit meters or with Pay As You Go or Prepayment meters.
If you have a Prepayment meter, your supplier will be able to inform you of your eligibility. The only difference is that your discount will come in voucher form to top up your account.
Since the Warm Home discount doesn't happen year round, you might very well find you get a bigger discount in the long run if you switch to a cheaper energy tariff. Your energy supply stays the same while your energy prices go down. Making the market work for you could lead to a better energy deal for your home and your pocket. The Warm Home Discount is not necessarily the be all and end all for energy savings.
