No need to worry, finding out your energy supplier is extremely easy to do, and is the first step to being able to switch. If you are unaware who your energy supplier is, there’s a large chance you haven’t switched tariff in a long time, perhaps ever. You’re in the right place; let’s get started.
I haven’t moved house, but I don’t know who my supplier is
Ok, there is a couple of ways in which you can go about finding out your gas and electricity suppliers in this situation. We’ll assume that you are the account holder of your energy accounts, meaning that the money you pay is coming out of your bank account, if not, make sure that you are able to solicit information from them regarding their account.
Nowadays most people receive their gas and electricity supply from the same provider. This is what we’d call a dual fuel tariff; however, in some cases your gas and electricity supplier may be different. The easiest way to check this is to look at your energy bills that you receive monthly; however, this only works if you haven’t opted for paperless billing, which means all of your account details and billing information will be online. So, if this is the case, you can log into your online banking account or look at your paper bank statements to see if any supplier name features. This will always appear on your monthly bank statement for the bank account you pay your energy bills with; however, sometimes the reference name for payments can be a little ambiguous and therefore won’t help you out.
Your alternative to the above is to give your Distribution Network Operator and Meter Number Helpline a call, one for electricity and one for gas.
- To find out your gas supplier, you can call the Meter Number Helpline a call on 0870 608 1524. By doing so you can also find out your MPRN.
- To find out your electricity supplier you can call your Distribution Network Operator (DNO). Your DNO varies depending on where you live in the country and can even vary within regions, especially in Greater London. That said, it is likely that the current energy supplier of your new property will send you a letter addressed to ‘The Occupier’ which should inform you sufficiently about your tariff and the energy company that is supplying you.
