How gas actually reaches your meter
UK gas travels in three stages, and three different kinds of company own each one. NGN owns one specific link in the chain, and it is not the company that bills you.
-
1
Transmission: long-distance backbone
High-pressure gas travels along the National Transmission System owned by National Gas. This is the motorway, designed for big volumes over long distances.
-
2
Distribution: NGN's network
NGN steps the pressure down at offtake stations and carries the gas through around 37,000 km of local pipework under streets, pavements and finally into your home. NGN owns and maintains the pipe; it does not own the gas inside it.
-
3
Supply: your bill
An energy supplier buys gas wholesale, pays NGN a transportation charge, then resells it to you. The supplier is the only part of the chain you can switch.

How NGN is paid, and why that matters to your bill
NGN is a regional monopoly. To stop monopolies from over-charging, the regulator Ofgem caps the revenue NGN can collect each year under a multi-year framework called RIIO (Revenue = Incentives + Innovation + Outputs).
Capped revenue
Ofgem caps how much NGN collects each year. If NGN invests more efficiently, it keeps part of the saving; if it overspends, shareholders absorb the loss.
Hydrogen and heat
NGN runs hydrogen demonstration projects including HyDeploy and the H21 Leeds City Gate study. The future role of the gas grid in UK heating is being designed inside the network operators.
In your bill
Network costs typically sit between a fifth and a quarter of a UK household gas bill. Switching supplier only changes the supplier's margin and wholesale cost, not the network charge.
Northern Gas Networks: frequently asked questions
Call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 immediately. It is the same single number across Great Britain, and it automatically routes your call to NGN if you live on its network. Open windows, do not switch electrical appliances on or off, and leave the building until an engineer arrives.
NGN is owned by a consortium of long-term infrastructure investors led by Cheung Kong Infrastructure Holdings. Like every UK gas distribution network it operates under a licence regulated by Ofgem, and its allowed revenue is capped under the RIIO price control framework.
Just deliver it. NGN does not sell gas: it owns and maintains the pipes that move gas from the National Transmission System to your meter. The gas itself is sold by your energy supplier, who pays NGN a transportation charge that is included in your bill.
Apply through the NGN website with the property address and a rough timeline. NGN will tell you whether your street has a usable gas main, the route required for a lateral pipe to your property, and a quote covering excavation and pipe-laying. Domestic quotes are usually free.
A free Ofgem-mandated list of customers who need extra help in an outage: pensioners, people with young children, anyone relying on medical equipment, those with long-term illness. NGN uses the register to prioritise its response and deliver alternative heating during long unplanned outages. Sign up through your supplier or directly with NGN.
