Woman winning competition

People’s Energy has taken the top prize among energy providers at the 2021 Moneyfacts Consumer Awards. The provider was shortlisted by the site and voted for by customers as the top supplier for this year. Read on to learn more about the competition and about People’s Energy.

People’s Energy comes out on top

People’s Energy, a Selectra partner, came out top in its first year being nominated by the comparison site Moneyfacts. It beat out some stiff competition in the process - here were the top three according to consumers:

  1. People’s Energy
  2. Octopus Energy
  3. Igloo Energy

Analysts for the company, who reviewed each energy supplier’s offering before making their shortlist to be voted on, were not surprised to see People’s Energy come out on top its first time round. Michelle Monck, Head of Digital at Moneyfacts, had the following to say:

This is the first time People’s Energy Company has been nominated for this award and the feedback from customers has seen them scoop the top spot straight away. This recognises its commitment to putting its customers (which it calls members) first and to making energy affordable for all.

Those behind People’s Energy were thrilled to see their hard work in putting members first recognised. Co-founder Karin Sode said that winning the award was a “massive achievement”, thanking its members and pledging to redouble the company’s efforts in the future:

As a community interest company, we are committed to helping build a fairer, greener, better world for everyone – to see our values recognised in this way is both encouraging and motivating as we continue to grow and take the company forward.

What is People’s Energy?

People’s Energy is an energy supplier which is also, as its co-founder mentioned, a “community interest company”. This means that it does not have private shareholders that are looking to make a profit at its customers’ expense. It was founded in 2017 and pledges to put its customers (or “members”) and staff first.

One of the most interesting and appealing aspects of People’s Energy’s offer is its commitment to giving back 75% of its profits (when it makes one) to its members, which it plans to do in the form of an annual rebate.

Apart from financial commitments to customers, the provider also pledges to be as green as it can, and has become progressively more environmentally-friendly in its practices since it was set up. Here’s how it has progressed:

  • Last year, 87% of the provider’s electricity was produced from renewable sources - specifically solar, hydro and wind.
  • This year, around 97% of the electricity generated to power People’s Energy tariffs came from renewables.
  • The provider is one of only a handful of companies offering a 100% green gas tariff for business members, which it plans to scale up to offer to domestic customers in the future.

These are excellent developments and will appeal to environmentally conscious customers looking to bring down their carbon footprint. If you’d like to learn more about People’s Energy and its tariffs, see our dedicated provider page.
