As September comes into view, the summer of 2026 is drawing to a close, and it is worth pausing to take stock. It has been a season the country will remember: heatwave after heatwave, records falling as early as May, and a drought that left much of England and Wales parched. Beyond the discomfort of weeks spent trying to keep cool, the official figures point to one of the most extreme summers the UK has ever recorded. Here is what it leaves behind.

A summer that broke records from the very start

What made 2026 unusual was how early the heat arrived. The Met Office logged new monthly temperature records for England in both May and June: a new May high of 35.1°C at Kew Gardens on the 26th, and 38.0°C at Lingwood in Norfolk on the 26th of June. Both figures beat marks that had stood since 1944 and 1976, and they arrived weeks before the summer would normally peak.

The heat then kept coming back. By the Met Office's count the country went through six separate heatwaves between late May and mid-August rather than one long spell, and it was that relentless repetition, more than any single reading, that set the season apart. The hottest day of all came late: 38.1°C at Kew Gardens on 13 August ranked among the five hottest days ever recorded in the UK.

The human cost: more than 2,700 heat-related deaths

The most sobering part of the story is its human cost. Combining the UK Health Security Agency and Met Office estimates, more than 2,700 deaths were associated with the heat during the May and June episodes alone, split between roughly 550 in the late-May spell and around 2,200 across the June heatwave.

Those two months on their own come close to the 2,985 deaths recorded in the record-breaking summer of 2022, and sit well above the 1,504 counted across the whole of summer 2025. Researchers also estimate that about 42% of those deaths were driven by the extra heat that human-caused climate change added to the season, with daytime highs running some 3 to 4°C above what they would otherwise have been.

Good to know: these are interim estimates, attributed to the heat statistically rather than counted case by case, so they should be read with that caveat. They also understate the summer, since the July and August episodes are not yet included; the confirmed toll is not expected until UKHSA's annual report early next year.

A red alert, and a country running dry

The June heatwave was severe enough to trigger a red heat-health alert, only the second ever issued for England after July 2022, and the first ever seen in Wales. As the weeks wore on, water became the other headline, and the dry spell hardened into an official drought across much of the country.

  • England had its driest July on record in places, with the month bringing as little as 7% of average rainfall and barely 1% across parts of the south.
  • Wales recorded its driest July in 190 years, and drought was declared across the whole nation on 30 July.
  • Ten areas of England were officially in drought by mid-August, up from seven at the end of July.
  • Hosepipe bans reached more than 24 million people, with Thames Water, South East Water, Southern Water and Welsh Water among those bringing in restrictions.

A grid that felt the strain

Unlike Italy or Spain, Britain does not see its electricity demand spike in a heatwave: the grid still peaks on cold winter evenings, and air conditioning remains rare in UK homes. Even so, 2026 showed that summer heat is no longer a quiet season for the network. NESO issued rare summertime Electricity Margin Notices on 24 and 26 June, asking generators for extra output as the heat tightened supply margins.

Part of the problem is physics: high temperatures sap the efficiency of thermal power stations and make transmission lines sag, just as demand creeps up in the early evening when solar output fades. And the direction of travel is clear. NESO expects around 14 million British homes to have air conditioning by 2050, adding some 4.2 TWh of demand a year and turning hot spells into a genuine test for the grid.

What a summer like this means for our homes

For households, the lesson of 2026 is that keeping cool is becoming as much a part of the year as keeping warm. British homes are built to hold heat in rather than keep it out, so a handful of low-cost habits go a long way.

  • Cool the house before the heat builds: open windows overnight and close the curtains on the sunny side during the day.
  • Reach for a fan before a portable unit: a fan costs pennies to run, whereas a portable air conditioner can add real money to the meter over a long hot spell.
  • Run any cooling on the cheapest hours if you are on a time-of-use tariff, and switch it off in rooms nobody is using.
  • Treat insulation as a two-way tool: the loft and wall measures that keep heat in over winter also help keep it out in summer.
