Who Is EDF Energy?
EDF was founded in France in 1946 when around 1,700 smaller energy firms were nationalised, thus making it the country's main electricity generator and distributor.
EDF Energy History
The group survived until a European Directive in 1999 made EDF give competitors access to 20% of its business. Five years later, its status was changed from a state-owned to a limited liability corporation. The following year, the government floated a number of EDF shares on the Paris stock exchange for the first time.
EDF entered the UK energy market in 1998 when it purchased three local electricity boards and several power plants. In 2002, the EDF Energy we know today was born when these previously separate boards and power plants were merged into one firm.
EDF Energy continued to grow during the years that followed. In 2009, the supplier acquired British Energy and its nuclear power plants. At the time, British Energy was the largest independent energy generator in the UK. With this purchase, EDF Energy bought itself a seat at the table of large UK energy companies.
How Big Is EDF Energy?
EDF Energy currently has just over 10% of the electricity market share. This makes it the fourth largest electricity supplier in the UK. It follows British Gas in first place, E.ON in second and OVO in third.
What Does EDF Stand For?
The EDF in EDF Energy stands for Electricité de France. The multinational energy company is largely owned by the French government.
EDF Energy Tariffs and Prices
EDF offers fixed and variable tariffs payable in a number of ways, including direct debit and pay-as-you-go. It also offers specialised tariffs for owners of smart homes or electric cars. We've broken down the different types of EDF Energy tariffs below.
EDF Energy UK Fixed Tariffs
With a fixed-rate tariff, such as the EDF Energy Total Service tariff, your energy rates are guaranteed not to change for the duration of the contract. This means that your energy bills are more predictable as long as you keep using similar amounts of energy.
Will my energy bill stay the same with a fixed-rate tariff? No! Having a fixed-rate tariff does not mean that the total cost of your energy bill will not change. Just the unit rates and standing charges are fixed, so you'll still be charged for what you consume.
EDF Energy UK Variable Tariffs
Variable tariffs, such as the EDF Energy standard tariff, the rate you pay can change according to trends in the wholesale cost of energy. While variable energy tariffs may initially appear cheaper, history shows the price usually rises. Typically, variable tariffs are not the most cost-effective choice in the long run. EDF Energy will inform you at least 30 days before any change to the rate you pay for your energy.
EDF Energy UK Economy 7 Tariffs
Economy 7 is basically a catch-all name for tariffs with a different overnight rate for electricity. The seven in the name refers to the seven-hour off-peak period where electricity is traditionally cheaper, usually from late at night to early in the morning.
EDF Energy has tariffs that include cheaper off-peak prices overnight. This can be financially beneficial if you have electric storage heaters because you can charge them at night and use the heat throughout the day. Additionally, it is also suitable for those households who can use their appliances during the off-peak hours stated on their tariff.
EDF Energy offers both fixed-rate and variable tariffs to its Economy 7 customers.
EDF Energy UK Prepayment Tariffs
EDF Energy offers a number of prepayment tariffs. Paying for energy before you use it can give you more control over your bills and help you manage your finances.
EDF Energy UK EV Tariffs
EDF offers several special electricity tariffs for electric vehicle (EV) owners. EDF Energy currently has three EV tariffs available for electric vehicle owners:
- GoElectric - a single rate tariff and the only EV tariff that doesn't require a smart meter
- GoElectric 35 - a cheaper rate of electricity for five hours each night from 12am to 5am
- GoElectric 98 - from 9pm to 7am every night and all day at the weekend you get a cheaper rate of electricity.
If you are an electric vehicle owner, switching to an EDF Energy EV tariff could save you money.
To switch to an EDF Energy EV tariff, you must either own or lease an electric vehicle. To sign up for a two-rate EV tariff, you must have a smart meter that is compatible with EDF Energy.
EDF Energy UK Business Tariffs
EDF Energy is one of the largest business energy suppliers in the country. EDF Energy business tariffs are available for small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs), as well as for larger enterprises. It offers different fixed tariffs depending on the length of contract you choose. Fixed-price plans are available for one to four years.
SMEs can get an EDF Energy business quote on the suppliers website. For an accurate quote, you'll need to provide information about your energy consumption. You can get a 7% discount if you choose to pay via direct debit. For large businesses, you'll need to contact EDF Energy directly to get a quote.
EDF Energy offers several business energy tariffs and you can choose between a fixed-rate tariff or a variable tariff. The tariff length for business energy customers varies from one to four years.

Each EDF Energy phone number is a 03 number meaning they will cost you a local rate to call them. Local rates are usually counted in your minutes for your mobile or landline. These are not premium rates.
EDF Energy Emergency Number
EDF Energy does not have a dedicated emergency number to call if you’ve lost your supply or you have a gas leak. If you are in this situation, you will need to call either the power cut line on 105, or the gas leak emergency number on 0800 111 999.

EDF Energy Reviews
According to Which?, EDF Energy was given a customer score of 56% in their latest survey, ranking 10 out of 16 energy suppliers rated by Which?. At least 10% of customers have found a reason to complain about EDF Energy since October 2021, with its strengths being bill accuracy and bill clarity, as well as being a low carbon supplier.
EDF Energy Reviews from Citizens Advice
In a recent survey from Citizens Advice, EDF Energy came in third place out of 21 energy suppliers. It received an overall score of 3.9 out of five stars. EDF Energy has moved up several places, having placed eighth in the previous survey. It is also the highest placed Bix Six supplier. EDF Energy Pay Bill
If you need to pay your EDF Energy bill, you can do so in the following ways:
- Online — Simply log in to MyAccount and click on "Make a Payment". Enter the amount you want to pay and your card details. Click to confirm the payment.
- Via the app — The app is free to download from the App Store and Google Play.
- By Direct Debit — Most customers pay via direct debit. You can set up Direct Debit payments via MyAccount. This is the cheapest way to pay for your energy.
- By phone — Make an automated payment by calling 0333 200 5108. This line is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
- With cash or cheque — You can pay your energy bills by cash or cheque at your bank or building society. You may be charged extra for this service. Cheques should be made out to EDF Energy Customers Ltd. You should write your 12-digit account number on the back of the cheque.
- By bank transfer — The EDF Energy bank account number is 13845095 and the sort code is 40-05-30. Put your EDF account number as the reference. You can find it on your bill. It starts with "67". Note that payments may take up to three days to complete.
EDF Energy Meter Readings
Do you need to submit your EDF Energy meter readings? If you have an EDF Energy smart meter, it will automatically send your meter readings to the supplier. If you have a standard credit meter (or a smart meter that is not compatible with EDF Energy), you will need to submit your EDF Energy meter readings manually to ensure that you receive accurate bills.
You can submit your EDF Energy meter readings in the following ways:
- Online — You can submit EDF Energy meter readings via My Account. If you don't have an online account with EDF Energy, you can still submit your meter readings online. Simply go to the EDF Energy homepage, hover over where it says "My Account" in the top left corner and click on "Submit a meter reading". Scroll to the bottom of the page and click "Submit a reading online". You will need to provide your 12-digit account number and postcode.
- Via the EDF Energy app — The app will even notify you when it's time to submit your meter readings. You can either enter the reading manually or simply take a photo of your meter and submit it. The app also comes with a built-in torch to help you read the meter in the dark.
- By phone — You can call EDF Energy on 0333 200 5108 to submit your meter reading. This automated line is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You will need to provide your 12-digit EDF Energy account number.
For safety reasons, only attempt to read your meter if it's safe to do so. If the meter has exposed wires or is difficult to access, call EDF Energy in the first instance to request the meter be repaired or replaced.
EDF Energy Top Up
Are you an EDF Energy prepayment customer? If you need to top up your prepayment meter, there are a few different ways you can do so. We break these down below.
EDF Energy Prepayment Meter Top Up
For customers with standard prepayment meters, you can top up your key or card at any PayPoint or Payzone outlet, as well as your local Post Office. We recommend holding on to your receipt until the top up has gone on your meter. The maximum amount you can top up on your key or card is £49 per transaction. EDF electricity meters hold up to £249 and gas meters hold up to £999.
EDF Energy Friendly and Emergency Credit
If you can't make it to the local shop to top up and your meter is running low on credit, you can insert your key or card to activate the emergency credit. If you're having problems, don't wait until you've run out of credit. Go ahead and contact EDF Energy for help. Representatives are available Monday to Friday from 8am to 6pm and on Saturday from 8am to 2pm
EDF Energy also offers friendly emergency credit to its prepayment customers. Friendly emergency credit is a safety net to ensure customers are not left without electricity overnight when it may be difficult to top-up. Your meter will need at least £0.01 of regular credit for friendly emergency credit to activate and will be paid back at your next top-up.
The EDF Energy friendly emergency credit activates automatically at 6pm Monday to Saturday until 9am the following day. If the following day is Sunday or a bank holiday, friendly emergency credit will stay active until the next working day.
EDF Energy Smart Meter Top Up
If you have a smart meter, you can top up in the following ways:
- Via the EDF app — On the homescreen, tap “Top up your meter”. Enter you top-up amount and tap 'Confirm top-up'. Then enter your card details and click 'Top up now'.
- Online — In MyAccount, go to the My payments section and select 'Make a payment'. Enter your card details and click 'Pay now'.
- By phone — The EDF automated top-up line is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The number is 0333 200 5108.
- At your local shop — As with a traditional prepayment meter, you can top up at any PayPoint or Payzone outlet. You can also top up at the Post Office.
- With your UTRN — If more than an hour has passed since you topped up your meter and the credit has still not appeared, manually enter your 20-digit Unique Transaction Reference Number (UTRN) into the meter to top up. This will either be sent via text or email, or if you topped up at the shop it will be on your receipt. The EDF Energy UTRN should look like this: 1234-5678-9098-7654-3210.
EDF Boiler Cover
Although it includes cover on some of its tariffs, EDF Energy does not provide the heating and boiler cover itself. The supplier has teamed up with Domestic & General to offer the boiler cover and maintenance plans.
EDF Energy offers three boiler cover plans: BoilerCare Gold, BoilerCare Platinum and BoilerCare Total. These cover plans include the following:
- The boiler and controls
- Annual boiler service
- Access to the maintenance portal
- Ongoing tips to keep your boiler running smoothly
- Repairs done by Gas Safe engineers
- A replacement boiler worth up to £750 (doesn't include installation costs)
- Your central heating system (for Platinum and Total customers only)
- BoilerCare Total also includes home emergency cover for plumbing and drainage, wiring, locks and security, infestation and roof tiles
You can find these different EDF boiler cover plans, along with their prices, in the table below. These plans last for 12 months.

To be eligible for EDF boiler cover, you must own the heating equipment. It should also be in good working order and under 15 years of age when you take out a cover plan. The boiler should be out of guarantee and it can not be used for business purposes.

EDF Smart Meters
Do you want to get an EDF Energy smart meter? The energy supplier has already started installing second-generation smart meters (SMETS2). The advantage of these new smart meters is that they are interoperable between suppliers. This means that if you change energy suppliers, your EDF Energy smart meter should continue to function without losing its "smart" functionality.
Advantages of having an EDF smart meter include the following:
- The smart meter will automatically submit your meter readings.
- Your bills will be accurate rather than estimated.
- You can track your energy consumption in near real-time.
- You can keep up with how much you're spending on energy.
If you would like to have an EDF Energy smart meter installed, you should either contact the EDF Energy customer service team or book an appointment online via your EDF Energy online account.
EDF Energy Smart Homes
The EDF Energy SmartHome website is now closed As of 30 September 2021 the EDF Energy SmartHome website closed and new SmartHome products are not available. If you have any questions about products bought from the EDF Energy SmartHome website you can contact them by email at [email protected].
For products that were purchased more than 30 days before the closure, EDF Energy recommends you contact the manufacturer for help under the manufacturer warranty.
EDF Energy offered various tariffs specifically for smart home enthusiasts, some of which come bundled with smart devices. With an Amazon Dot acting as a hub, you can connect all your smart systems and control them with just your voice via the Alexa AI.
On top of the usual tricks, like asking it to play music or read the news, EDF Energy added its own functions to Alexa. These functions allow customers to do things like check your EDF Energy account balance, submit meter readings and find out when your tariff ends or when your next payment is due.
Prior to the closure of the SmartHome website, you could also get the following smart appliances from EDF Energy:
- Smart lights — These LED bulbs can be voice-activated. You can also dim and turn on or off the lights using your phone or tablet.
- Smart thermostats — These let you program your heating to come on from anywhere via your phone, tablet or computer.
- Smart security cameras — Monitor your home inside and out from anywhere in the world. Features include face recognition, alarm detectors, pet monitoring and live alerts.
- Smart radiator valves — These gadgets allow you to control the heating for each room in your house. You can make sure the heat is used just where it's needed, saving both money and carbon emissions.
- Smart plugs — These plugs let you turn on or off electrical appliances using your phone or tablet.
EDF Energy Warm Home Discount
From October to March, EDF Energy offers a Warm Home Discount to reduce energy bills for households in fuel poverty. Customers who receive the ‘Guaranteed Credit’ element of ‘Pension Credit’ are automatically entitled to claim the discount, but those on low incomes or receiving certain means-tested benefits can also apply.
The scheme is in its tenth year and eligible customers can apply for a one-off discount towards their energy costs. For the most recent winter period, the rebate was £140.
Warm Home Discount Changes for 2022/23 Due to the ongoing energy crisis, the Warm Home Discount will increase to £150 for the application period 2022/23.
EDF Energy Trust
The EDF Energy Trust was a registered nonprofit organisation that helped people who had problems paying their energy bills.
The EDF Energy Trust closed in late 2019. However, financial support is still available through the EDF Energy Customer Support Fund. To apply for this fund, you must be an EDF Energy customer. This EDF Energy Trust Fund guide lays out details on how to apply.
EDF Energy ECO Scheme
Eligible EDF Energy customers can avail themselves of the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) scheme. This government-backed programme helps people make their homes more energy efficient and in turn lowers the cost of heating your home.
If you own or privately rent your home and are in receipt of certain types of benefits you may be able to get your cavity walls or loft insulated completely free of charge. What’s more, if your boiler breaks down, under ECO you may be eligible for a subsidy to have it replaced.
EDF Energy Fuel Mix
Today EDF Energy touts itself as the UK’s largest producer of low-carbon electricity, which it sometimes brands as 'blue energy'. This means that it gets most of its electricity from nuclear sources. The company owns all of Britain's active nuclear reactors and supplies around one-fifth of the country’s power.
Just over 62% of EDF's electricity comes from nuclear sources. Traditional green energy from renewables makes up 29% of its fuel mix. Gas comes in at 7.5%, coal at 1.3% and 0.1% is classed as coming from other sources.
