No matter if you live within or outside the gas mains, Guernsey Gas assures that all residents of Guernsey can have access to gas supply in order to meet their individual needs. Read on to find out more about what the provider can do for you.

About Guernsey Gas

Guernsey Gas controls both the gas distribution network and the gas supply in the bailiwick of Guernsey. A subsidiary of International Energy Group (IEG)*, the company aims to provide affordable and reliable energy to the island's residential and commercial customers.

Guernsey Gas first launched as Guernsey Gas Light Company in the 1830s. It lit the island’s streets until 1922, when gas lighting was replaced with electricity. Guernsey Gas continues to provide gas to its customers for heating and cooking purposes. It even opened a shop, The Energy Centre, in 2005 to sell a variety of gas appliances.

What is IEG*? International Energy Group (IEG) owns both Guernsey Gas and Jersey Gas. The company has a monopoly on the regulated gas market in the Channel Islands.

Where does the gas come from and how is it distributed?

Guernsey Gas originally generated the island’s gas from coal at a production plant in St. Peter Port. In the 1960s, the company decided to switch to providing Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)**, which improved both the quality and safety of the fuel.

Guernsey Gas buys the gas from the international wholesale market. It is then transported from mainland Europe to Guernsey by ship, where it is kept in gas storage terminals until it is distributed to residents on supply.

The gas is distributed to local homes and businesses in two different ways. Residents within the island’s grid receive gas through a network of underground gas pipelines. Customers who live outside of the mains gas network can have their gas delivered to their doors in cylinders or tanks.

What is LPG**? Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is a mixture of propane and butane. It can be used to power heating and cooking appliances, as well as vehicles.

Energy bills and tariffs

In August 2019, IEG announced that Channel Islands residents would expect a 3.8% increase in their gas bills. For the average household, this would come out to be about £35 more per year. We’ve broken down the updated tariffs that Guernsey Gas has to offer so that you can decide which one works best for you.

Super Economy 24 Central Heating tariff

This tariff is for customers who use gas for central heating, water heating and cooking. Meters are read on a quarterly basis and customers pay via a monthly direct debit. This helps to spread energy costs over the course of the year.

A medium-sized household in Guernsey would use around 10,000 kWh of gas annually and spend about £120 pounds per month. While this total cost of gas is generally more than triple what customers pay in the UK, it is cheaper than Jersey Gas rates. Jersey households spend on average £144 more per year on gas than Guernsey residents.

Super Economy 24 Central Heating tariff
Cost type Price
Standing charge 37.01p per day
Unit rate 14.10p per kWh
Estimated annual cost £1279,50 per year

Standard 24 Domestic tariff

This Standard 24 Domestic tariff is for customers who use gas just for cooking or gas fires. In exchange for a higher gas price per unit, customers on this tariff do not pay a daily standing charge to be connected.

The average two-person household that uses gas just for cooking uses around 365 kWh of gas per year. On this tariff, customers with a household of this size could expect to spend just over £6 per month, while a house with four people would spend around £12.

Gas meters are read quarterly and customers can make payments either online via the supplier’s website, or in person at The Energy Centre Showroom at Admiral Park, St. Peter Port.

Standard 24 tariff
Cost type Price
Standing charge 0.00p per day
Unit rate 20.3658p per kWh
Estimated annual cost for a two-person household (only cooking) £74.34 per year
Estimated annual cost for a two-person household (only cooking) £892.08 per year

Super Economy 24 LPG tariff

The Super Economy 24 LPG tariff is for customers who live outside the mains gas network. The gas is supplied with a metered LPG Cylinder and can be used for central and water heating, as well as for cooking.

A medium-sized Guernsey household would use about 10,000 kWh of gas per year and spend about £120 per month on gas bills with this tariff.

Unlike the Super Economy 24 Central Heating tariff, this tariff offers cheaper unit rates for gas customers once they use more than 54.79 kWh of gas per day, which calculates to 20,000 kWh of gas per year. Unless you have a five-bedroom detached house, you should not expect to use this much gas.

Guernsey Gas has a top-up service for customers so that they don’t have to worry about ordering gas or running out.

Super Economy 24 LPG tariff
Cost type Price
Standing charge 35.35p per day
Unit rate up to 54.79 units per day 13.48p per kWh
Unit rate over 54.79 units per day 12.47p per kWh
Estimated annual cost £1,447 per year
