Pros & cons
Selectra verdict
Jersey Electricity is the only show in town, so the question is not whether to choose them but how to engage well with them. The good news: supply reliability and the carbon profile of imported French electricity are both excellent, and the local customer-service team is more reachable than most GB supplier call centres.
Where JEC customers most often lose money is by sitting on the wrong tariff. If you have storage heaters, an EV or any night-time load, run a tariff review every two years against Domestic, Economy 7 and EVNight. The St Helier walk-in counter will do the calculation for you for free. If you hit a service problem the supplier will not resolve, escalation to the Jersey Competition Regulatory Authority (JCRA) is the formal route.

Walk-in office sorted my tariff in 20 minutes
I went into The Powerhouse expecting a queue and a fight. Instead a lovely lady ran my last four bills through her screen and told me I had been on the wrong tariff for two years. She moved me to Economy 7 on the spot and explained how to read the meter. Best service I have had from any utility.
— Margaret, St Helier
Selectra expert comment
A reminder that the St Helier walk-in counter is genuinely useful, not a relic. For households with storage heaters or any night-time load, asking for a face-to-face tariff review every two years is the single highest-value thing a JEC customer can do.
Reliable supply, frustrating bills
Power never goes off, fair play to them. But my quarterly bill jumps about because they still estimate half the time. Asked twice for a smart meter and was told they will be in touch. That was last year.
— Tom, St Brelade
Selectra expert comment
A typical JEC review: the supply availability story is genuinely best-in-class, but the smart-meter rollout has been slow. Until your meter is upgraded, submit a manual reading on the first of each month via the MyJEC portal or the meter-reading line. You will not get refunded for over-estimates automatically, but you can request a rebill from the date of the last accurate read.
EVNight tariff confusing on the bill
Moved to EVNight for the EV. Saving on charging at night but I never know what the day-time rate will actually be on the bill. Customer services tried to explain it three times and I am still not sure. Three stars because the saving is real, just wish the maths was clearer.
— Sophie, Trinity
Selectra expert comment
The EVNight tariff is well-designed for EV households but the peak/off-peak split is opaque on paper bills. Ask JEC for the half-hourly export from your meter (they will email it as a CSV) and run it through a spreadsheet for two months before you decide whether EVNight beats Domestic for your usage pattern.
Tariffs higher than I expected
Just moved over from Surrey. The unit rate is shocking compared to what I was paying in England. I understand it is an island but a heads-up on the JE Move-In pack would have helped. Otherwise the connection process was painless.
— David, Gorey
Selectra expert comment
New-arrival sticker shock is a recurring theme. The Jersey unit rate sits above the GB price cap because JEC has to recover its share of the subsea cable capacity on a 50,000-customer base. Households moving from the mainland should budget 15% to 30% more for electricity than the equivalent GB property, and consider whether oil or air-source heat-pump heating may be more economical than direct electric.
Disability registration was hard work
My father is housebound and needs medical equipment. Took three phone calls and an email to get him added to the priority register equivalent. Once on it the service has been fine but the onboarding felt clunky.
— Emma, St Saviour
Selectra expert comment
JEC operates a Vulnerable Customer Register similar to GB Priority Services. The process is less automated than at GB suppliers, so we recommend doing it in person at The Powerhouse if at all possible. If service quality on the register itself ever slips, the JCRA accepts complaints once you have exhausted JEC’s own complaints process.
Quick EV wallbox install
Booked the JEC team to fit a 7 kW wallbox. Survey within ten days, installed within four weeks of the quote. The EVNight tariff has paid back the install cost in nine months on my mileage. Recommended.
— Andrew, St Aubin
Selectra expert comment
JEC’s in-house EV install team is one of the few credible options on the island for OZEV-equivalent wallbox grants and tariff bundling. If you are also adding solar PV, ask for the export-tariff schedule at the same time: pairing PV with EVNight can shave another £150 to £300 a year off the bill for a typical Jersey household.
Selectra editorial takeaway
Reading across the six reviews, a consistent pattern emerges: JEC delivers operationally on supply, but the customer experience is uneven on the everyday admin (tariff explanations, smart-meter rollout, vulnerable-customer onboarding). Because there is no competing supplier to switch to, the value of reviews is not "should I pick this provider" but "how should I engage with the provider I cannot leave".
The most actionable lesson is to use the walk-in counter at The Powerhouse. Trying to resolve tariff or billing questions by phone or email tends to take longer than a 20-minute conversation in person. For unresolved complaints, the JCRA route is well-documented and JEC engages with it constructively.
Selectra explains
Author: Selectra UK energy team · Updated April 2026
Jersey Electricity’s online review footprint is modest by GB standards because it serves about 50,000 customers on a single island. The Trustpilot count sits in the low hundreds rather than the hundreds of thousands. That said, the signals across Trustpilot, Google Maps and the Jersey Evening Post are remarkably consistent: high marks for supply reliability and the in-person team, lower marks for billing clarity and the speed of the smart-meter rollout.
Channel
Headline score is solid for a monopoly utility. 5-star reviews cluster around walk-in service and wallbox installs; 2-star reviews are dominated by tariff confusion and estimated bills.
Channel
The St Helier customer centre scores meaningfully higher than the supplier’s phone or email channels. Strong evidence that face-to-face is the most efficient way to deal with JEC.
Channel
The JEP covers JEC tariff decisions and storm-recovery stories in detail. Recent coverage has been broadly positive on outage response and critical on standing-charge increases.
Channel
Annual reports note that JEC complaint volumes are low in absolute terms but that resolution times can lag GB norms. The JCRA route remains the formal escalation path for unresolved disputes.
Selectra expert verdict
For a monopoly utility, JEC scores well online. The combination of subsea-cable reliability and a real walk-in office in St Helier makes the supplier easier to deal with than its scale suggests. The two weak points (tariff confusion and slow smart-meter rollout) are real and worth pricing in: book a tariff review every two years and assume estimated bills until your meter is upgraded.
A great supplier still costs you money if you're on a bad tariff. Compare JEC against every other UK supplier on the price for your actual usage.
Common questions
Jersey Electricity is regulated by Ofgem and bound by the Standards of Conduct that protect domestic customers. Reliability is best judged against your own usage profile: read recent reviews, check the Citizens Advice star rating for Jersey Electricity, and confirm the supplier's customer-service hours match when you actually need to call.
Trustpilot, Google Maps and app-store reviews reflect real experiences but are often skewed toward dissatisfied customers (people only post when something goes wrong). The most balanced single rating is Citizens Advice's quarterly supplier performance table, which scores all UK domestic suppliers on complaint handling, transfers, debt and communication — and is built from regulator-supplied data, not self-reported.
Confirm the unit rate (p/kWh) for both gas and electricity, the daily standing charge, the contract length, any exit fee (typical range: £25-£75 per fuel), and whether the deal requires a smart meter. Always cross-check the headline price against several other suppliers based on your actual postcode and annual kWh consumption from a recent bill.
If you're a current or former Jersey Electricity customer, share your experience on Trustpilot UK (search the supplier name), Google Maps (write a review on the Jersey Electricity business profile), or the Apple App Store and Google Play if you've used the mobile app. Selectra also collects independent reviews to help future customers compare suppliers objectively.
