Pros & cons

What we hear from Jersey Gas customers

Strengths

  • Sole gas supplier on Jersey with about 19,000 mains + bulk-LPG customers, reliable LPG supply chain via the La Collette terminal.
  • 24/7 emergency line on a local number (01534 755555), free to call, staffed by Gas Safe engineers based on the island.
  • Mainline propane tariffs reviewed annually by the JCRA, transparent and not subject to GB Energy Price Cap volatility.
  • In-house engineering team for boiler installation, servicing and breakdown cover, one of the few credible options on the island.
  • Part of the International Energy Group (IEG) family alongside Guernsey Gas and Manx Gas, shared procurement scale on LPG and engineering.
  • No fixed-term contracts and no exit fees on any domestic gas tariff.

Weaknesses

  • Jersey is a monopoly market for gas: there is no competing supplier to switch to.
  • Headline unit rates sit notably above the GB natural-gas price cap because propane (LPG) costs more per kWh than mains natural gas, and Jersey’s customer base is small.
  • The product is propane (LPG), not natural gas, appliances must be configured for propane; you cannot simply swap a UK-mainland natural-gas boiler in without conversion.
  • Smart-meter / smart-tank monitoring rollout is at an earlier stage than the GB norm.
  • The mains footprint covers St. Helier and the inner parishes only, outlying properties depend on bulk-tank or cylinder LPG with per-delivery pricing.

Selectra verdict

Our independent take on Jersey Gas

Jersey Gas is the only show in town for gas on Jersey, so the relevant question is not which supplier, it is which tariff. The supply chain is reliable, the 24/7 emergency line works as advertised, and the JCRA-supervised annual tariff review means price changes are not arbitrary.

Where Jersey Gas customers most often lose money is by sitting on Standard 24 Domestic when they should be on Super Economy 24 Central Heating, or by ordering bulk LPG ad-hoc rather than on the Super Economy 24 LPG tariff. If your annual gas use is above 12,000 kWh, ring sales (01534 755577) and ask for a tariff check. The unit-rate gap can be £250 to £400 a year.

Verdict: for Jersey households the choice is which tariff. Standard 24 Domestic for low-use mains customers, Super Economy 24 Central Heating for full mains CH, Super Economy 24 LPG for bulk-tank CH.

Engineer was on site in 90 minutes
Had a pilot light going out on a Saturday morning. Called the emergency number expecting a Monday booking. An engineer was on site in 90 minutes, diagnosed a worn thermocouple, fitted a new one and was gone in 40 minutes. Couldn’t fault it.

Selectra expert comment

Boiler-breakdown response is a clear strength of Jersey Gas, the in-house Gas Safe team based at La Collette can usually attend a domestic breakdown the same day. Worth keeping the 01534 755500 number on speed-dial if you rely on a gas boiler.

Reliable LPG deliveries, expensive vs UK
Tank refills always arrive on schedule and they call ahead. The price per litre is what hurts, I’m paying about 40% more per kWh than my brother does on natural gas in Hampshire. Not Jersey Gas’s fault, that’s the LPG market, but a useful warning for anyone moving over.

Trustpilot

Selectra expert comment

A common note: propane (LPG) is structurally more expensive per kWh than mains natural gas. Households moving to Jersey from the mainland should expect a gas bill 30 to 50% higher than the equivalent UK property, and may want to compare against air-source heat-pump heating before committing to a long-term gas plan.

Easy switch to Super Economy 24 CH
Sales lady (Cathy) checked my last year of bills and confirmed I’d save about £270 a year by moving to Super Economy 24 Central Heating from Standard 24. Took 5 minutes on the phone. The next bill came through with the lower unit rate as promised.

Selectra expert comment

The Super Economy 24 Central Heating tariff is the most commonly under-claimed product Jersey Gas sells. If you have a gas boiler running for full CH and hot water, run a tariff check by phone (01534 755577), the break-even point sits around 12,000 kWh/year and most CH households comfortably clear it.

Off-mains pricing is opaque
I’m on bulk LPG out west and the per-litre price changes every refill. Sometimes it drops 5p, sometimes it jumps 10p. Customer service explains it as “wholesale market” but a chart on the website would help.

Trustpilot

Selectra expert comment

Bulk-LPG pricing is genuinely tied to the wholesale propane market, the same price moves you see in your bill are visible on commodity exchanges. Either request a fixed per-litre price for 6 or 12 months from sales (some customers can get one for high-usage tanks), or switch to the Super Economy 24 LPG kWh-priced tariff for steadier monthly costs.

Online account is basic
The MyAccount portal only really shows bills. I can’t change my direct debit through it, can’t see my consumption trend, can’t schedule a service. Half the things they say I can do online actually need a phone call.

Trustpilot

Selectra expert comment

A fair criticism, the Jersey Gas online portal lags GB-sized utility apps. For now the practical workflow is: bills and PDFs online, everything else by phone (01534 755500). Worth raising with the Jersey Consumer Council if the gap impacts vulnerable customers.

Switched from oil heating to mains propane
Lived in the same house 18 years on oil. Sales surveyed the property in 10 days, mains connection was made within 6 weeks, new boiler in another 2 days. The Super Economy 24 CH tariff has paid back the install cost in 14 months. Should have done it years ago.

Google Maps

Selectra expert comment

Oil-to-propane conversions are a sweet spot for Jersey Gas. The economics work when (a) you sit inside the mains-propane footprint, (b) your oil boiler is near end-of-life anyway, and (c) you can use the Super Economy 24 Central Heating tariff. Outside the mains footprint, the bulk-LPG equivalent is still attractive but the upfront tank install changes the payback maths.

Selectra editorial takeaway

Reading the reviews together

Reading across the six reviews, a consistent pattern emerges: Jersey Gas delivers operationally on supply and engineering, but the customer-facing admin (online account, off-mains pricing transparency) lags GB norms. As with Jersey Electricity, the value of these reviews is not "should I pick this provider", there is no alternative, but "how should I engage with the provider I cannot leave".

The most actionable lesson is to review your tariff annually by phone, particularly if you have full gas central heating. A 5-minute call to sales (01534 755577) typically uncovers a Super Economy 24 saving that the customer would otherwise miss for years.

Selectra explains

Jersey Gas's online presence: expert analysis

Author: Selectra UK energy team · Updated April 2026

Jersey Gas’s online review footprint is modest by GB standards because the supplier serves about 19,000 customers on a single island. Trustpilot and Google Maps both sit in the low hundreds rather than the hundreds of thousands. The signals are consistent: high marks for engineering response and the 24/7 emergency line, lower marks for online account features and off-mains LPG pricing transparency.

Annual reports note that Jersey Gas complaint volumes are low in absolute terms but that the JCRA periodically asks for additional tariff justification on bulk-LPG products.

Selectra expert verdict

Reading every channel together

For a monopoly utility serving 19,000 customers on a single island, Jersey Gas scores in line with comparable Channel Islands and Isle of Man utilities. The operational story (mains reliability, 24/7 emergency response, in-house Gas Safe engineering) is strong; the digital and pricing-transparency story trails GB norms. Two weak points worth pricing in: do an annual tariff check by phone, and assume bulk-LPG prices move with the wholesale market.

Reviews don't pay the bill — the tariff does.

A great supplier still costs you money if you're on a bad tariff. Compare Jersey Gas against every other UK supplier on the price for your actual usage.

Common questions

Jersey Gas reviews — frequently asked questions

Jersey Gas is regulated by Ofgem and bound by the Standards of Conduct that protect domestic customers. Reliability is best judged against your own usage profile: read recent reviews, check the Citizens Advice star rating for Jersey Gas, and confirm the supplier's customer-service hours match when you actually need to call.

Trustpilot, Google Maps and app-store reviews reflect real experiences but are often skewed toward dissatisfied customers (people only post when something goes wrong). The most balanced single rating is Citizens Advice's quarterly supplier performance table, which scores all UK domestic suppliers on complaint handling, transfers, debt and communication — and is built from regulator-supplied data, not self-reported.

Confirm the unit rate (p/kWh) for both gas and electricity, the daily standing charge, the contract length, any exit fee (typical range: £25-£75 per fuel), and whether the deal requires a smart meter. Always cross-check the headline price against several other suppliers based on your actual postcode and annual kWh consumption from a recent bill.

If you're a current or former Jersey Gas customer, share your experience on Trustpilot UK (search the supplier name), Google Maps (write a review on the Jersey Gas business profile), or the Apple App Store and Google Play if you've used the mobile app. Selectra also collects independent reviews to help future customers compare suppliers objectively.
