Selectra verdict
Manx Gas is the only show in town for gas on the Isle of Man, so the question is not which supplier, it is which tariff. The supply chain is reliable, the 24/7 emergency line works as advertised, and CURA-approved annual tariff reviews mean price changes are not arbitrary. The fact that 2026 tariffs were held flat at the start of the year is a tangible benefit of the IEG hedging strategy.
Where customers most often lose money is by sitting on a Mains Gas Central Heating tariff when they should be on the cooking-only NA tariff (or vice versa). If your annual use looks materially different from your last year, ring 01624 644444 and ask for a tariff check. The unit-rate gap between cooking-only and CH tariffs can easily be £100 to £200 a year.
Verdict: for Isle of Man households the choice is which tariff. Mains Gas Central Heating for full mains CH; the dedicated cooking (NA) or fire (NB) tariff for low-use households; the LPG equivalents for off-mains rural properties.

Engineer found the leak in 30 minutes
Smelled gas in the kitchen on a Sunday afternoon. Called the 0808 emergency line, an engineer was there in under an hour, isolated the leak at a corroded compression fitting under the hob and made the supply safe. Permanent fix booked for the Monday morning. Quick, calm and professional throughout.
— Andrew, Douglas
Selectra expert comment
The 0808 1624 444 emergency line is the consistent strength of Manx Gas. For genuine safety incidents the response time is competitive with much larger GB suppliers. Save the emergency number in your phone in advance, the GB national gas emergency line (0800 111 999) does not cover the Isle of Man.
Easy switch from Standard 24 to Central Heating
Phoned about my winter bills being higher than expected. The lady on the line ran a quick check, told me I should be on the Central Heating tariff rather than cooking-only, and switched the account on the spot. Next bill was £38 lower for the same usage.
— Sarah, Onchan
Selectra expert comment
A textbook case of the annual tariff review we recommend. Mains-gas households running a gas boiler for CH and hot water should not stay on the cooking-only NA tariff, the unit-rate gap (14.0112 vs 10.287 p/kWh) outpaces the saving from a nil standing charge above about 1,800 kWh a year.
Energy Centre staff knew their stuff
Wanted to replace a 17-year-old combi. Walked into Murdoch House and the team showed me three options with clear specs and warranty terms. They quoted within four working days and the install went without drama.
— Michael, Castletown
Selectra expert comment
The Murdoch House walk-in reception is a genuinely useful resource for boiler replacement, particularly in older Isle of Man properties where flue regulations matter. We still recommend a second quote from an independent Gas Safe engineer for any install above £3,000.
LPG bill confusing
Live off-mains and run an LPG mini-bulk tank. Every refill comes with a different total and the kWh conversion makes it harder still. Customer services explained the 7.08 kWh per litre formula but I needed it three times before it clicked.
— Linda, Ramsey
Selectra expert comment
Mini-bulk LPG bills convert litres to kWh at a fixed 7.08 kWh per litre, then apply the same unit rate as mains gas. A spreadsheet of delivery dates, litres delivered and unit rate paid is the easiest way to verify each invoice. For 47-kg cylinders the conversion is 652.95 kWh per cylinder.
Online account is basic
The My Account portal really only shows bills and lets me submit a meter read. I can’t change my direct debit through it, can’t see my consumption trend, can’t schedule a service. Everything else needs a phone call.
— David, Peel
Selectra expert comment
A fair criticism, the Manx Gas online portal lags GB-sized utility apps. For now the practical workflow is: bills and meter reads online, everything else by phone (01624 644444) or in person at Murdoch House. Worth raising with CURA if the gap impacts vulnerable customers.
Switched from oil heating to mini-bulk LPG
Lived in the same farmhouse 22 years on oil. Sales surveyed the property in 8 days, the tank install took 3 days and the new boiler was running by the end of the week. The LPG Central Heating tariff is paying back the install cost more quickly than I expected.
— Pauline, Andreas
Selectra expert comment
Oil-to-LPG conversions are a sweet spot for Manx Gas in off-mains parishes. The economics work when (a) your oil boiler is near end-of-life anyway, (b) you can use the LPG Central Heating mini-bulk tariff rather than 47-kg cylinders, and (c) you can negotiate the tank install bundled with the boiler. Always get a second quote from an independent Gas Safe engineer for the boiler swap.
Selectra editorial takeaway
Reading across the six reviews, a consistent pattern emerges: Manx Gas delivers operationally on supply, emergency response and engineering, but the customer-facing admin (online portal, off-mains LPG bill complexity) lags GB norms. As with the sister utilities Guernsey Gas and Jersey Gas, the value of these reviews is not "should I pick this provider", there is no alternative, but "how should I engage with the provider I cannot leave".
The single most actionable lesson is to review your tariff annually by phone, particularly if your gas use changes (new boiler, baby in the house, retirement, fewer occupants). A 5-minute call to 01624 644444 typically uncovers a tariff fit that the customer would otherwise miss for years.
Selectra explains
Author: Selectra UK energy team · Updated May 2026
Manx Gas (trading as Isle of Man Energy) serves about 17,000 customers on a single island, so its online review footprint is modest by GB standards. Trustpilot and Google Maps both sit in the low hundreds rather than the hundreds of thousands. The signals are consistent across channels: high marks for the 24/7 emergency line and Murdoch House walk-in service, lower marks for online-account features and off-mains LPG bill complexity. CURA’s December 2025 confirmation that prices would remain flat at the start of 2026 received broadly positive coverage in Manx Radio and the Isle of Man Today.
Channel
5-star reviews cluster around emergency call-outs, oil-to-LPG conversions and Murdoch House boiler installs. 2- and 3-star reviews are dominated by online-account limitations and off-mains LPG bill clarity.
Channel
Walk-in reviews are consistently more positive than phone-channel reviews. Engineer team praised by name across multiple posts; sales and billing get a wider spread.
Channel
Local press coverage focuses on CURA tariff decisions, the IEG hedging strategy and the 2024 rebrand to Isle of Man Energy. Reporting has been broadly positive on the December 2025 price freeze and critical of pre-rebrand transparency.
Channel
CURA reviews every Manx Gas tariff change in advance. Annual reports note that gas complaint volumes are low in absolute terms; the regulator periodically asks for additional justification on the LPG component of the schedule.
Channel
Manx Gas posts about Priority Care sign-ups, engineer recruitment and the 4Gen Gas opt-in scheme. Engagement is modest but the brand engages with customer comments, particularly around the emergency line and mains works.
Selectra expert verdict
For a monopoly gas utility serving 17,000 customers on a single island, Manx Gas / Isle of Man Energy scores in line with comparable Channel Islands and Crown Dependency utilities. The operational story (mains reliability, 24/7 emergency response, in-house Gas Safe engineering, CURA-approved tariffs) is strong; the digital and pricing-transparency story trails GB norms. Two weak points worth pricing in: do an annual tariff check by phone, and keep a spreadsheet of LPG delivery prices if you are off-mains. The 2024 rebrand to Isle of Man Energy and the 2026 flat-price decision both reflect a steady IEG-led modernisation that has not yet reached the customer portal.

Common questions
Manx Gas is regulated by Ofgem and bound by the Standards of Conduct that protect domestic customers. Reliability is best judged against your own usage profile: read recent reviews, check the Citizens Advice star rating for Manx Gas, and confirm the supplier's customer-service hours match when you actually need to call.
Trustpilot, Google Maps and app-store reviews reflect real experiences but are often skewed toward dissatisfied customers (people only post when something goes wrong). The most balanced single rating is Citizens Advice's quarterly supplier performance table, which scores all UK domestic suppliers on complaint handling, transfers, debt and communication — and is built from regulator-supplied data, not self-reported.
Confirm the unit rate (p/kWh) for both gas and electricity, the daily standing charge, the contract length, any exit fee (typical range: £25-£75 per fuel), and whether the deal requires a smart meter. Always cross-check the headline price against several other suppliers based on your actual postcode and annual kWh consumption from a recent bill.
If you're a current or former Manx Gas customer, share your experience on Trustpilot UK (search the supplier name), Google Maps (write a review on the Manx Gas business profile), or the Apple App Store and Google Play if you've used the mobile app. Selectra also collects independent reviews to help future customers compare suppliers objectively.
