Selectra verdict
Outfox Energy is the right supplier for the simplicity-first switcher: someone who wants a transparent rule (5% below the cap), no exit fee, and 100% renewable electricity, and who is happy to manage their account through a web portal rather than a polished mobile app. The cap-tracker design means you never need to renegotiate at renewal — the rate moves with the cap every quarter and stays below it.
For pure-price hunters with a standard meter, Octopus Tracker and the very cheapest Big Six fixed deals can occasionally undercut Outfox by £30-£60 a year, but only Outfox combines a guaranteed sub-cap rate with zero exit fees on every tariff — making it unusually safe as a default landing zone. EV owners on a working SMETS2 meter should look at My EV 1.0 alongside Octopus Intelligent Go before signing.

Genuinely cheaper than the cap, every quarter
Switched from EDF's SVT in October 2025. My quarterly bill has dropped by about £35 each time, in line with the cap, and the unit rate on the bill is always a few pence under what Ofgem publish. Easy to verify — I check both numbers side by side.
— Mark, Norwich
Selectra expert comment
The cap-tracker promise is verifiable on every bill — Outfox prints the cap unit rate for your region alongside their rate. Always run this check at the first bill after a cap change; if the gap is less than 5%, raise a query through the portal immediately.
Smart meter swap took a while but worth it
Needed a SMETS2 install to move onto My EV 1.0. The original booking was bumped twice but the engineer finally arrived in early March, did a clean swap and the off-peak rate kicked in the next day. Saving roughly £25 a month on EV charging now.
— Helen, Sheffield
Selectra expert comment
Outfox's Priority Smart Meter Exchange programme is the route to take for EV customers — it prioritises households moving onto My EV 1.0. Lead times can be 4-8 weeks. Have a recent meter reading and your EV-charger model number on hand for the install slot.
No exit fee — left the fix two months in, no fuss
Took the One Year Fixed deal in November, then the cap fell sharply in February. Moved back onto the cap-tracker the same day, no penalty, no quibble. Most suppliers would have hit me with £50-£75 per fuel.
— Robert, Cardiff
Selectra expert comment
The no-exit-fee promise on fixed deals is materially unusual — it turns the Outfox fix into a hedge with a free release valve. Worth taking when wholesale prices feel volatile; if the cap drops, you can switch back to the tracker the same day without penalty.
Portal is fine, no app is a downside
Account works, bills are clear, direct debit is the right amount. But the portal still needs a desktop browser to feel right — on mobile some screens are clunky. An app would close the gap with Octopus and E.ON Next.
— Sarah, Bristol
Selectra expert comment
The no-app reality is the single biggest tech gap in the Outfox proposition. The portal is mobile-responsive but lacks half-hourly smart-meter charts, photo meter capture and live chat. If you live in your phone, this is the trade-off you accept for the cheaper rate.
Solar SEG payments arrive on time, quarterly
On the Outfox Export tariff for two years now. Quarterly payments land within a week of the billing date, no standing charge to claw back, and the export rate has nudged up twice during my time with them. Boring in a good way.
— David, Leicester
Selectra expert comment
The SEG payment cycle (1 Jul / 1 Oct / 1 Jan / 1 Apr, within 5 working days) is a positive Outfox feature versus the slower annual settlement some Big Six SEG tariffs use. For high-export households (>2,000 kWh/year), compare against Octopus Outgoing for a higher headline rate — Outfox is most competitive where you also import from Outfox.
Hard to reach during the rebrand window
Tried to change my direct debit during the Outfox the Market → Outfox Energy rebrand in spring 2025. Phone lines were heavily delayed, the portal kept signing me out, and an email took two weeks to get a substantive reply. Resolved in the end but stressful.
— Priya, Leeds
Selectra expert comment
The 2024-2025 rebrand window is the single weakest patch in the recent Outfox reviews record — most complaints from that period concern slow response times rather than billing errors. The rebrand is now complete; if you spot residual issues with old outfoxthemarket.co.uk links or pre-rebrand emails, escalate through the formal complaints route ([email protected]) for a written reply within 5 working days.
Selectra editorial takeaway
Reading the six reviews as a set, the picture is consistent with the platform numbers: strong on price, strong on the no-exit-fee promise, weaker on phone-channel response times and on the absence of a native mobile app. Five-star reviews cluster around the cap-tracker rule (which customers actively verify against their bill), the SEG payment cadence and the no-penalty exit. Lower-star reviews concentrate on the 2024-2025 rebrand period and on the mobile portal experience.
The practical playbook for a 2026 Outfox customer is: verify the 5% gap on your first bill, take the fix if you want budget stability (it costs nothing to exit), and use the help-centre form rather than the phone line for any non-urgent written query.
Selectra explains
Author: Selectra UK energy team · Updated May 2026
Outfox's online footprint is narrower than a Big Six but unusually consistent. The 2024-2025 rebrand from Outfox the Market to Outfox Energy fragmented the review record across the old and new Trustpilot profiles, but the underlying scores are stable. The supplier publishes its own Tariff Information Labels and complaints policy on outfox.energy, runs an open help-centre at help.outfox.energy and uses a single Customer Identity portal at portal.outfox.energy. There is no native mobile app — the customer portal is browser-only.
Channel
Strongly positive overall. Most-praised: the 5%-below-cap promise being visible on the bill, the no-exit-fee guarantee, and clean billing. Negatives concentrate on the 2024-2025 rebrand window when phone wait times spiked.
Channel
Google scores sit lower than Trustpilot because the platform captures more unprompted complaints — recurring themes are slow phone response during the rebrand and the lack of a mobile app. Resolution narrative is generally positive once the queue clears.
Channel
Sits in the upper half of the supplier performance table (~8th of the major UK domestic suppliers in the most recent Citizens Advice quarter). Best on switching speed and clear billing; mid-pack on complaint handling within eight weeks.
Channel
No major active enforcement cases in 2026. Historic record includes the 2020 dispute over unpaid Feed-in Tariff levy contributions (£602,930) which the supplier subsequently settled. Compliance with the Standards of Conduct and the Energy Price Cap is currently in good standing.
Channel
Reddit threads are notably more positive than average on Outfox — the cap-tracker is repeatedly recommended as the simplest no-watch default for non-engaged switchers. Most-cited concern is the absence of a native mobile app.
Channel
The supplier publishes Tariff Information Labels, a complaints handling policy, full T&Cs, the SEG terms and a Priority Services Register page openly on outfox.energy. This is materially better than several Big Six brands where the same documents sit behind log-in walls or PDFs that are hard to crawl.
Channel
Press coverage centres on the cap-tracker product (frequently called out as one of the simplest in the market) and the 2024-2025 rebrand. Which? has highlighted Outfox as one of the smaller suppliers worth watching; MoneySavingExpert has been broadly favourable, particularly on the no-exit-fee promise.
Channel
Active on Facebook (Outfox.Energy) and LinkedIn (outfoxenergy), with an X account (outfox_energy) and YouTube channel (@outfox.energy) carrying tariff explainers and rebrand announcements. Response cadence on DMs is faster than the phone line during business hours.
Selectra expert verdict
Triangulating across Trustpilot, Google, the Citizens Advice supplier-performance table, Reddit, Ofgem and the supplier's own published documents, Outfox's online presence is materially stronger than its size would predict. The 5%-below-cap rule, the no-exit-fee promise and the open publication of Tariff Information Labels give the brand a clean, agent-readable signal that survives the rebrand intact.
The single weakest signal is the Citizens Advice mid-pack ranking on complaint handling within eight weeks. If you read only one source, read the Citizens Advice supplier-performance table — it is the only score built from regulator-supplied data rather than self-reported reviews, and it captures the post-rebrand operational reality in close to real time.
A great supplier still costs you money if you're on a bad tariff. Compare Outfox against every other UK supplier on the price for your actual usage.
Common questions
Outfox Energy is regulated by Ofgem and bound by the Standards of Conduct that protect domestic customers. Reliability is best judged against your own usage profile: read recent reviews, check the Citizens Advice star rating for Outfox Energy, and confirm the supplier's customer-service hours match when you actually need to call.
Trustpilot, Google Maps and app-store reviews reflect real experiences but are often skewed toward dissatisfied customers (people only post when something goes wrong). The most balanced single rating is Citizens Advice's quarterly supplier performance table, which scores all UK domestic suppliers on complaint handling, transfers, debt and communication — and is built from regulator-supplied data, not self-reported.
Confirm the unit rate (p/kWh) for both gas and electricity, the daily standing charge, the contract length, any exit fee (typical range: £25-£75 per fuel), and whether the deal requires a smart meter. Always cross-check the headline price against several other suppliers based on your actual postcode and annual kWh consumption from a recent bill.
If you're a current or former Outfox Energy customer, share your experience on Trustpilot UK (search the supplier name), Google Maps (write a review on the Outfox Energy business profile), or the Apple App Store and Google Play if you've used the mobile app. Selectra also collects independent reviews to help future customers compare suppliers objectively.
