AA car insurance policies

You have a range of AA car insurance policies to choose from. We’ll explore them in detail here so you can make the best decision for your circumstances. On top of the standard car insurance policies, there are a host of add-ons you might like to consider. The most famous is the AA breakdown cover, which you can purchase whether you take out car insurance with the AA or not. AA also offers motorbike insurance, which we’ll include information on right after the breakdown section.

Standard car insurance policies

AA offers two main types of car insurance policies:

  1. Third party, fire and theft - This policy type is cheaper because it offers less protection but still provides more than the legal minimum requirement.
  2. Comprehensive - This is the bells and whistles policy. If you want maximum protection for you and your car, this is the option for you.

Here’s a summary of some of the benefits you will receive with each policy:

Benefit Third party, fire and theft Comprehensive
Liability to others
Loss or damage
Personal belongings
Damage to trailers
Injury to you and/or your partner
Medical expenses
Emergency treatment
Car sharing
Travelling abroad
Lost or stolen keys  *
Uninsured driver promise

* Lost or stolen keys when insured for third party, fire and theft, is only covered if loss or damage is caused directly by fire or theft.

Optional extras

There are three add-ons you can include on your car insurance policy:

  1. Motor legal assistance - If you are involved in an incident and it’s the other party’s fault this will cover legal costs to help recover your excess, alternative transport costs, loss of earnings or personal injury compensation.
  2. Excess protection - This will enable you to claim back your excess on a claim if you’re at fault or the other party can’t be found due to no identification.
  3. Motor accident plan - This pays up to £60,000 if you die or are injured in a car accident. This amount is in addition to any payment from your car insurance policy.

Breakdown cover

While this is an optional extra we have dedicated a separate section to it because you can take this cover out even if you don’t have AA car insurance.

When you take out vehicle breakdown cover it is for your vehicle, no matter who is driving it. You can choose from a range of options making your cover as extensive or as simple as you like.

You can call a mechanic straight from the AA app. That way you can track where they are until they reach you. Furthermore, the app will also give you great discounts at over 1,300 restaurants, pubs and service stations.

Motorbike insurance

With AA motorbike insurance you can choose from the following options: 1) third party, 2) third party, fire and theft and 3) comprehensive cover.

On top of the standard cover, here are some of the extras you can add on:

  • Legal expenses cover - If you are involved in an accident that is not your fault, this will cover you for up to £100,000 worth of legal expenses. It will help recover uninsured losses such as loss of earnings, personal injury compensation and personal belongings that are damaged.
  • Helmets and leather cover - This will cover your riding gear for up to £1,000.
  • Personal accident cover - In the event of accidental injury, disability or death to yourself, you are covered for up to £25,000.
  • Replacement vehicle - If your motorbike isn’t rideable after an accident or theft or attempted theft, you will receive a hire bike for up to 14 days.
  • Excess protect - In the event of accidental damage, fire, theft, vandalism or flood, your policy excess will be covered up to £600.

AA car insurance cancellation policy

The AA car insurance cancellation policy allows you to cancel at any time. However, there may be some fees involved and whether you get all of your premium back will depend on if your policy has commenced or not.

If you cancel within 14 days and cover hasn’t commenced

The 14 days start from the date you receive your policy documentation or the date you enter into the contract (whichever is later). In this case, you would receive your full premium back that you paid as well as the £28 arrangement fee.

If you cancel within 14 days and cover has commenced

Again, the 14 days start from the date you receive your policy documentation or the date you enter into the contract (whichever is later). In this instance, you will receive any unused cover back, calculated on a daily pro-rata basis. The charge for your period of cover used will be a minimum of £15 and you would not be entitled to receive the £28 arrangement fee back.

If you cancel after 14 days

The 14 days stipulated is the same as in the above example. As long as you haven’t claimed you will receive the pro-rata amount back for the cover that you haven’t used. The charge for your period of cover used will be a minimum of £15 and you will not receive the £28 arrangement fee back. On top of this, you will be charged £30 for cancelling.

AA car insurance reviews

In this section, we’re going to bring you the best of (and worst of) AA car insurance reviews. As with all online reviews, it’s important to remember that what worked or didn’t for one person doesn’t mean it will be the same for you. However, it’s always good to see if there are any common issues or good points that might provide some insight.

First off, we’re going to look at reviews left on the Feefo site. There are nearly 7,000 AA car insurance reviews on this site alone! That is an impressive figure and should give us a great idea of how customers feel about AA car insurance. The average rating is 4.6/5 stars, which is nothing short of excellent. Let’s take a look at exactly what customers love and don’t love about AA.

Customers really like the website and how easy it is to get a quote. Following this, policy documents are then reportedly sent out quickly (which can be an issue with other providers). The friendly, helpful service is also commented on frequently by customers who have had to phone up.

Some customers did hit a few speed bumps though with their AA car insurance. Sometimes customers have taken out a policy and paid, only to receive a letter asking for more money for the premium, due to an old accident not declared. This is usually related to customers who booked online, so if you have any doubts call a provider to make sure you have the correct premium at the time of purchasing.

The other biggest gripe was about the breakdown option not being included in the car insurance price. Some say the options should be clearer so if this is something you want to include, remember that breakdown cover is an optional extra.

On the Trustpilot site, customers paint a different picture. Of the 350+ reviews, the company received an average of only 1.5/5 stars. A common theme is around policy renewals and the price going up drastically. Another issue mentioned is that it’s difficult to get through on the phone lines regarding car insurance.

On the plus side, the breakdown service gets repeatedly good reviews on this site. Customers like how fast and efficient it is. Furthermore, the price offered for first-time premiums is competitive, which obviously goes down well with customers.
