FIPS 186-2 is a US federal computer-security standard published in the NIST Federal Information Processing Standards series. It specifies the Digital Signature Standard, used to protect the integrity and authenticity of data.
According to its foreword, the publication was issued under the authority given to the Secretary of Commerce and NIST by the Information Technology Management Reform Act of 1996 and the Computer Security Act of 1987.
