This is a “Coal Facts” statistics page from the World Coal Association (WCA), a London-based industry body, carrying a 2013 copyright notice. It presents a snapshot of coal’s place in the world energy system, stating that coal provided around 30.1% of global primary energy needs, generated over 40% of the world’s electricity, and was used in the production of 70% of the world’s steel.

It also lists the top coal producers for 2013 (estimated), including:

• the United States, 904 Mt;
• India, 613 Mt;
• Indonesia, 489 Mt;
• Russia, 347 Mt, followed by South Africa, Germany and Poland.
