Two myths to clear up first. Yes, you can legally buy a Huawei phone in the UK in May 2026. UK headlines mash them together. They are not the same thing.
UK 5G infrastructure removal
On 14 July 2020, the UK government announced an immediate ban on installing new Huawei equipment in 5G networks, and required operators (BT, Vodafone, Three, O2) to strip out all existing Huawei 5G kit by 31 December 2027. The legal basis is the Telecommunications Security Act 2021.
Who this affects: mobile network operators. Not you.
The Huawei branding you saw on UK 5G masts up to 2027 is being replaced with Ericsson and Nokia kit. Your handset, your SIM and your contract are not part of this ban.
The Google Mobile Services cut-off
In May 2019, the US Department of Commerce added Huawei to its Entity List. From that date forward, Google has been legally barred from licensing the full Android (with Google Mobile Services) to Huawei.
What this means: every Huawei phone launched after May 2019 ships with no Play Store, no Gmail, no Google Maps, no YouTube and no Google Pay.
Huawei uses its own AppGallery store and the Petal Search aggregator instead. AppGallery is missing most UK banking apps, Google's own apps, WhatsApp Business, Microsoft 365 (some apps), Strava and many UK retail and transport apps.

HarmonyOS NEXT: Huawei cuts the last Android cord
Until 2024, even without Google services, Huawei phones could still run most Android apps if you side-loaded the APK file. That changed on 22 October 2024 when Huawei launched HarmonyOS NEXT (also called HarmonyOS 5). HarmonyOS 6 followed in 2025.
NEXT is a clean break. It is built on Huawei's own kernel and does not include any Android compatibility layer. APK files do not install. Apps must be written natively for HarmonyOS or distributed through Huawei's AppGallery in the HarmonyOS-specific format.
What this means for UK buyers
The side-loading workaround is gone on any Huawei phone running HarmonyOS NEXT or later. Older Huawei models (Mate 50 Pro, P50, Pura 70 era) still run the Android-compatible HarmonyOS 4 and can side-load APKs. New Huawei phones launching in 2026, including the Pura X foldable and the Mate 80 series, ship with HarmonyOS NEXT or higher and cannot.
Huawei's strategy is openly to build an ecosystem independent of both Android and iOS, the way Apple did with iOS in 2007. Richard Yu, Huawei's CEO, said in April 2025 that the move away from Google Mobile Services is "strategically irreversible". Do not expect Huawei to reverse course.

The reason is not the 5G ban (that affects networks, not handsets). It is the GMS gap. Huawei has done the maths: a HarmonyOS-only foldable launched into a UK market that runs on Google Pay and Play-Store banking apps would generate returns and refunds, not sales. Huawei UK now prioritises non-flagship models and accessories, where the missing-Google issue matters less.
The signal hidden in stock decisions
If Huawei itself does not push its newest flagships into UK retail, that tells you more than any review. The company knows its UK consumer-phone position is structurally compromised until either Google licensing returns (Huawei's CEO has ruled this out) or HarmonyOS captures enough UK developer mindshare to fill the app gap (no sign of this in 2026).
