About

Who is BT Mobile?

BT Mobile is the consumer mobile brand of BT Group plc, the UK’s former incumbent telco. It was originally launched as BT Cellnet in 1985, spun out as O2 in 2001, and then re-entered the consumer market in 2014 as an MVNO on the EE network.

In 2016, BT acquired EE outright in a £12.5 billion deal, bringing EE’s 4G and 5G network in-house. Since then, BT Mobile has been the “family” mobile brand for BT broadband and TV customers, and EE has been the standalone consumer brand. From 2023, BT has progressively moved new sales channels onto the EE brand, but existing BT Mobile contracts continue to operate normally.

BT Group is listed on the London Stock Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange and is regulated by Ofcom. Complaint handling falls under the Ombudsman Services: Communications scheme.

~38,000 reviews

Mostly negative

Trustpilot covers BT as a whole (broadband, TV, mobile). Most complaints are about price rises and the call-centre experience rather than mobile signal. BT mobile customers consistently rate the network quality itself highly because it is EE underneath.

Ofcom does not publish a separate BT-Mobile-only complaints figure. The wider BT group sits at 9 broadband complaints per 100k (industry average is 8), driven mostly by retentions and billing, not network reliability.

Which? places BT Mobile in the middle of the UK pack on value for money. Coverage and reliability score high (EE host), customer service and price-rise transparency drag the overall result down.

Positive overall

Frequent advice: BT Mobile is best taken as part of a BT broadband and TV bundle to unlock the Halo discount and a single bill. As a stand-alone SIM-only it is rarely the cheapest, since you can buy EE-network MVNOs (Lycamobile, 1pMobile) for far less.

Selectra expert verdict

Independent read, no commission shaping

BT Mobile makes sense in two situations: you already have BT Full Fibre at home and qualify for the Halo discount, or you specifically want the BT brand as a single-supplier choice. In those cases, the 25 GB SIM at £15 (or about £9 with Halo) is a fair price for a 5G plan on the UK’s best network.

If you do not have BT broadband, you are usually overpaying. The same EE signal is sold cheaper by EE-network MVNOs like Lycamobile and 1pMobile, or you can buy directly from EE with their own perks. With BT moving new sales to the EE brand from 2023, the brand strategy itself reinforces this conclusion.

FAQ

BT Mobile deals, coverage and contact, your questions answered

Is BT Mobile the same as EE?

Closer every year, but not quite the same. BT bought EE in 2016, and BT Mobile customers have always been on the EE network. Since 2023, BT has been gradually retiring the BT Mobile brand in new sales channels and pushing customers to EE direct, but the BT Mobile contract, billing and number-portability process still exist for current customers. If you are signing up today, you will mostly be offered EE branding; if you are already on BT Mobile, your service continues normally.

What network does BT Mobile use?

BT Mobile runs on the EE 4G and 5G network, which Ofcom consistently rates as the UK's top network for coverage, speed and reliability. Signal at your postcode is identical to a SIM bought directly from EE; you can sanity-check that on the EE coverage checker before signing.

How much do I save with BT Mobile on BT broadband?

BT customers on a BT Halo broadband plan get up to £8 a month off a BT Mobile SIM (the exact discount depends on the Halo tier). A 25 GB SIM-only at £15 a month drops to around £8 to £9 a month for Halo customers. Stand-alone (no BT broadband), the same SIM is £15.

Does BT Mobile include 5G and EU roaming?

Yes on both, on most current SIM-only deals. 5G is included on every SIM-only plan from £10 upwards, with no extra fee, on devices and in postcodes where EE has switched on 5G. EU roaming is inclusive on most plans, with a fair-use data cap (typically 12 GB) per monthly bill cycle. Older BT Mobile plans signed before 2022 may exclude roaming, so check My BT.

How do I contact BT Mobile?

From a BT Mobile, dial 150 free. From any other phone, call 0800 138 8827, free from a UK landline. Lines run Monday to Friday 08:00 to 21:00, Saturday 08:00 to 20:00, Sunday 09:00 to 20:00. Live chat is on the BT website when you sign in to My BT.

Can I keep my number when leaving BT Mobile?

Yes. Text PAC to 65075 from your BT SIM. BT must reply within 60 seconds with a Porting Authorisation Code valid for 30 days, listing any early-termination fee. Give the PAC to your new network and your number transfers within one working day. The process is free and applies to every UK mobile provider.
