Sky Mobile Reviews

How happy are Sky mobile customers?

Happy customer

As Sky Mobile is a relatively new provider on the market there isn't a huge wealth of reviews on review sites like Trustpilot. Online customer reviews centre around some common pain points including customer service grievances or faults with phones that were purchased through Sky. The latter should be taken with a pinch of salt as the issue lies with the company that manufactures the phone as opposed to Sky mobile itself.

As Sky Mobile establishes its customer base most reviews are about Sky TV and broadband and the company as a whole. All of the Sky mobile reviews on Trustpilot average out to the company receiving a pitiful one out of five stars overall, which doesn’t necessarily bode well for those locked into a Sky contract. Find all the information available on their reviews in our dedicated Sky Mobile Reviews article.

Sky Mobile: perks for customers

The great thing about Sky mobile is that customers benefit from a range of perks that go beyond the bog-standard calls, texts and data phone plan formula. So what are these perks and will they be right for your needs? We’ve put together a list of the top 5 perks for Sky mobile customers so you can find out.

1.Rollover your data

Data rollover happy customer

A good number of consumers don’t use all of the data that they pay for and Sky has an ingenious solution for this. At the end of the month, all unused data automatically gets rolled over and goes into your ‘piggy bank’for you to use whenever you like.

2.Free Streaming for all Existing Sky TV Customers

Want portable free entertainment at your fingertips? Who wouldn't!

If you’re a Sky TV subscriber you can stream Sky TV on your smartphone and even download content to your device for free! Meaning you’ll have more data left for music streaming or to jump on social media, WhatsApp message friends or even score a few bargains shopping online! If you then save loads of data from all the free streaming, it would go into your piggy bank to use the following month.

Sky TV packages can also come with broadband, so if you like the sound of this particular perk it’s worth looking into.

3. Free Sky TV Streaming for Sky Mobile Customers

If you have Sky mobile but you’re not a Sky TV subscriber, don’t fret, you won’t miss out on all the perks entirely. You can still stream an unlimited amount of content from Sky apps that don’t require a subscription including the Skynews app. Not only will this help stave off boredom or ignorance on current affairs but you may also be able to reduce your data usage on your plan.

4.Sky Free Wifi Hotspots

Want even more ways to save on or manage your data? A big upside to the Sky mobile network is that customers have access to thousands of free wifi hotspots across the country. All you have to do isfind a Sky wifi hotspot near you and then select _The Cloud from the available wifi network list.

5.Mix your own plan

Have you ever had the somewhat painful misfortune of signing on for a contract and then realising you’ve chosen the wrong one? To the credit of Sky mobile, their plans offer a huge degree of flexibility by allowing you to ‘change your mix’ of features. You can increase or decrease your data, calls and text allowances at any time making signing up for long-term contracts not as restrictive.

Sky mobile plans

One thing Sky does really well is simplicity and flexibility in their phone plans. To understand Sky mobile’s plans you only need to consider three main components:

  1. Data plans - how much data will you need?
  2. Calls and text - unlimited talk and text or pay as you go?
  3. International use - do you need to an ‘International Saver’?
Price Data allowance within the UK Talk and text
£6 1GB Unlimited
£12 4GB Unlimited
£15 8GB Unlimited
£20 20GB Unlimited
£30 40GB Unlimited

Keep in mind that these prices are usually available on pay monthly long-term contracts. Make sure to always read the fine print before you commit to a long-term plan!

How much data will I need?

How much data will I need?

With unlimited or free calls and texts included, the main thing you’ll need to focus on is how much data you’ll need per month. The amount you will need really depends on how often you use the internet. If you use mobile internet a vast amount it’s important to note that there are no unlimited plans for mobile data with Sky at this point in time.

It’s important to note, that with Telecom regulator Ofcom’s 2018 Communications Report stating that consumers use an average of 1.9 GB of mobile data per month you may not need to opt for a high gigabyte data plan. That being said, you don’t want to get bitten by nasty excess charges if you exceed your allowance either. Thankfully, if you don’t select the right amount of data with Sky you can roll over your unused data or even change your plan at any time, ideal!

Save money

Pay as you use

Interested in a pay as you go SIM? Sky also has a pay as you go option available. If you decide to opt for Sky mobile Pay As You Use and change your mind, you can always change to the unlimited calls and texts option on the My Sky app or by logging into your account.

Sky calls and textPay As You Use Charges = £0.10 per minute and per text

Be careful with opting for pay-as-you-go options as it’s easy to wrack up a substantial bill without realising it. Think carefully about how often you use your phone to determine whether or not this option would be best for you.

International roaming and calling

Sky plans also feature the International Saver. For £3 per month, you get discounted international calls and texts from the UK plus a host of other ‘Roaming Passport’ destinations to up to 60 international landline and mobile destinations. The International Saver is included in monthly plans until it’s removed upon request. How necessary this feature would be will really depend on where you’re lucky enough to travel to or the locations you’d be making international calls or texts to on a regular basis.

Thanks to EU legislation additional roaming charges within the EU are illegal. If you’re calling or travelling within the EU you will be charged for calls, data and texts on your plan as normal. Sky mobile Roaming Passport plus is created for 12 of the most popular destinations for roaming outside of the EU.

SIM-only vs SIM + Phone

Mobile phone

Do you already have the phone you need or do you like to always have one of the latest smartphones in hand? Sky offers the option of SIM-only deals, meaning you’d keep your existing mobile phone and just pay for what you use or a monthly tariff. If you choose to bring your own phone, all you will be paying are the monthly tariffs above.

If you need a new mobile phone or want to receive regular upgrades every 12 or 24 months you’d be looking to combine a phone and a SIM card in your plan.

Sky Network Coverage

Mobile network signal

Sky mobile is an MVNO - Mobile Virtual Network Operator - meaning that it does not have its own mobile network but piggybacks off the network infrastructure of another phone carrier. In this case, Sky piggybacks off the O2 network. Sky may not have their own network infrastructure but things like sim cards, mobile plans, payment and customer support are all covered by them.

Download Speeds

Download speed

There’s no doubt that Sky mobile boasts some great features, especially for Sky TV customers, but it isn’t all good news for the provider. The download speed for Sky on a 4G network ranks below its rivals significantly, so if you’re looking for fast downloads this is where the service could fall short for you. High-speed data is needed for things like downloading albums or TV episodes very quickly.

Pros and cons

Pros Cons
Unlimited calls and text on all plans.  Slower download speeds than their competitors.
Fantastic perks including data piggybank, free streaming and free wifi hotspots.  Sky (the company overall) receives a measly 1 out of 5 stars on Trustpilot.
Mostly on par with competitors for network coverage.  Their network coverage is not the highest on the market.
