Who is Vodafone?

Vodafone is one of the four UK host mobile networks, launched on 1 January 1985 as the very first commercial UK mobile network. It is part of Vodafone Group plc, the multinational telco listed on the London Stock Exchange and headquartered in Newbury.

In 2025, Vodafone UK completed a long-awaited merger with Three UK, creating the country’s largest 5G network by footprint. The merged operator trades primarily as Vodafone, but Three customers still use the Three brand during the multi-year integration. The merger was approved by the Competition and Markets Authority subject to network investment and consumer pricing commitments.

Vodafone is regulated by Ofcom. Complaints fall under the Ombudsman Services: Communications scheme.

Vodafone is the UK’s second-strongest network on raw performance, with the combined Vodafone-Three 5G footprint now the largest in the country. If you live in a city or large town and 5G speeds matter, Vodafone is a credible alternative to EE.

The honest catches: customer service is below par (Ofcom complaints above average); EU roaming uses a day-pass model on most plans rather than free roaming; and in-contract price rises are among the largest in the UK. If you want O2-network signal cheaper, look at giffgaff; if you want EE-network signal cheaper, look at Lycamobile.

Is Vodafone a good network in 2026?

Does Vodafone include EU roaming?

Mostly no, with exceptions. Most current consumer plans use a day-pass model: you pay around £2.41 a day in Europe to use your UK allowance. The flagship Unlimited Max plan includes 10 GB of free EU roaming as standard. Some older plans (signed before 2021) still include free EU roaming for the lifetime of the contract.

Does Vodafone have 5G everywhere?

5G is live in every major UK city and now most large towns, especially since the Three merger added Three’s 5G sites to Vodafone’s network. What is VeryMe Rewards?

VeryMe is Vodafone’s free rewards programme, accessed through the My Vodafone app. Members get rotating offers like a free Costa coffee, cinema tickets, restaurant discounts, food delivery codes and giveaways. Comparable to O2 Priority but less focused on event tickets.
