Mobile Phones Direct in 2026:
cashback-led aggregator, owned by AO World

Founded in 1996 and acquired by AO World in November 2018 for £38.1m, Mobile Phones Direct is the online-only aggregator that consistently undercuts EE, O2, Vodafone and Three on flagship Pay Monthly contracts. The trick: cashback by redemption claimed in five instalments across the contract.

About the brand

From 1996 mail-order startup to AO-owned online aggregator

Mobile Phones Direct was founded in 1996 in Newbury, Berkshire as an independent mobile-phone retailer selling Pay Monthly contracts by mail order. The company grew through the 2000s as the mobile market exploded and was an early mover from telephone ordering to a fully online checkout.

In November 2018, AO World plc agreed to acquire Mobile Phones Direct for £38.1m, gaining a foothold in the UK mobile aggregator market on top of its core white-goods e-commerce business. The deal completed in early 2019 and the brand has continued to operate under its own name and website ever since.

Today, Mobile Phones Direct sits inside AO Retail Limited, sells contracts on all four UK host networks (EE, O2, Vodafone and Three), and ships every order with free DPD next-day delivery seven days a week. The business never opened a physical store and remains pure-play online.

What you can buy

Mobile Phones Direct services in 2026

Pay Monthly handsets, SIM-only plans, trade-in and cashback. No physical stores, no business sales channel.

Pay Monthly contracts

EE . O2 . Vodafone . Three

Full handset-and-airtime contracts on all four UK host networks. Upfront cost from £0 with 24- and 36-month terms, plus regular exclusive deals that undercut the networks own websites.

SIM-only plans

EE . O2 . Vodafone . Three

1-month rolling and 12-month SIM-only deals, mostly cashback-free so the headline price is the price you pay. Frequent flash-sale weeks bring the cost per GB below the networks direct offers.

Cashback by redemption

Five claims across the contract

The savings engine. Submit five cashback claims at months 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12, each backed by a copy of your bill. Miss a window and that instalment is lost, which is why the headline price is often hundreds below the network direct deal.

Free next-day delivery

7 days a week via DPD

Free DPD next-day delivery on orders placed by 8pm seven days a week. SIM is shipped with the handset and activates within 24 hours of receipt.

Trade-in

Spread across monthly bill

Send your old handset using a pre-paid label. The trade-in value is not paid as a lump sum: it is applied as a monthly discount across the full term of your new contract.

Pay Monthly broadband

Selected providers

A secondary range of home broadband and TV bundles alongside the core mobile catalogue. The mobile side is where Mobile Phones Direct excels: broadband is competitive but not best-in-class.

The cashback engine

How the Mobile Phones Direct cashback redemption works

The reason the headline price is so low. Five claims, five fixed windows, five chances to lose the saving if you forget.

1

Place the order

Buy any Pay Monthly contract flagged with a cashback amount. The savings are quoted as a total figure over 12 or 24 months.

2

Wait for the first claim window

The first claim opens in the 4th month of the contract. You receive an email reminder, but the responsibility to claim is yours.

3

Upload your bill

Log in to the Mobile Phones Direct help centre, upload a PDF or screenshot of your latest network bill and submit the claim.

4

Repeat at months 6, 8, 10 and 12

Five claims in total. Each unlocks one instalment of the cashback. Miss a window and that instalment is forfeited.

5

Payment by bank transfer

Each successful claim is paid by BACS within 28 days. Use the help centre to chase any claim still outstanding after 99 days from order shipment.

Selectra expert tip. Set a calendar reminder for the 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th and 12th month of your contract the moment you place the order. Almost every negative Trustpilot review about Mobile Phones Direct boils down to a forgotten claim window. Claim on time and the deal pays out exactly as advertised.

Customer service

What 86,000 UK customers actually say

On uk.trustpilot.com Mobile Phones Direct holds a 4.3 out of 5 "Excellent" rating from over 86,000 reviews, the strongest score of any major UK mobile aggregator. Five-star reviews almost always cite the speed of delivery, the savings versus the network direct price and the UK-based phone support.

The minority of negative reviews cluster around three issues: cashback claims missed because the customer forgot a window, slow refunds on cancelled orders, and the difficulty of getting hold of customer service during peak periods (typically iPhone launch week and Black Friday).

Mobile Phones Direct is FCA-authorised and the contract you sign is directly with the network, not with the retailer, so the network handles airtime issues, billing and the 14-day cooling-off period.

Mobile Phones Direct FAQ

The Selectra expert answers your questions

Yes. Mobile Phones Direct has traded since 1996, is FCA-authorised and is owned by AO World plc (LSE: AO.) since November 2018. The Pay Monthly contract you sign is direct with the network (EE, O2, Vodafone or Three), not with the retailer, and the 14-day cooling-off period applies as it would for any UK online purchase. Trustpilot rates the brand 4.3 out of 5 "Excellent" from over 86,000 reviews.

By cashback by redemption. The headline 24-month price you see is the price after assumed cashback. To actually achieve it you must submit five claims at fixed milestones (months 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 of the contract), each backed by a copy of your network bill. Miss a window and that instalment is forfeited, which is how the retailer can advertise totals £100 to £400 lower than the network direct deal.

The first claim window opens at the start of the 4th month of your contract, then again at months 6, 8, 10 and 12. Log in to mobilephonesdirect.co.uk/help/cashback, upload the relevant network bill as a PDF or screenshot, and submit. Successful claims are paid by BACS within 28 days. Set five calendar reminders the day you place the order.

Free next-day delivery via DPD, seven days a week, on orders placed before 8pm. Bank holidays excluded. The SIM is included in the same box and is usually activated by the network within 24 hours of receipt. Mobile Phones Direct does not currently offer in-store collection because it has no physical stores.

For new flagship handsets on 24- or 36-month Pay Monthly contracts, usually yes. Typical savings range from £100 to £400 over 24 months compared to the same plan on the network’s own website, provided you successfully claim all five cashback instalments. For SIM-only plans the saving is smaller and sometimes nil, so always compare the total contract cost rather than the headline monthly price.

UK Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013 give you 14 calendar days from delivery to cancel any online phone order without giving a reason. Call the returns line on 01480 088 8100 or use the help centre to start a return. Send the phone back in its original packaging with all accessories included; refunds are issued within 14 days of receipt of the returned device.

Yes. The trade-in value is not paid as a lump sum against the new phone. Instead, the agreed value is applied as a monthly discount across the full term of your new contract, reducing your effective line rental. The trade-in value is locked for 14 days once quoted; send the device back with the free pre-paid label provided.
