Electricity in the Newport, much like the rest of South Wales, used to be provided by 'South Wales Electricity Board'. This was the case between 1948 and 1990, when privatisation was introduced. After the company became a plc, it was eventually obtained by SSE in 2000, who still use this branding for energy sales in Wales today.

Between 1948-1973, gas in Newport came from the 'Wales Gas Board'; however, after this point, it became and area of the British Gas Corporation.
