Moving house tips to make your next move stress-free

A practical, no-nonsense guide to moving home: the eight tips that save the most hassle, a week-by-week timeline you can follow, and links to our deep-dive checklists on costs, council tax and change of address.

Moving house regularly tops the list of life's most stressful events, but most of that stress comes from leaving things to the last minute. With a clear plan, a realistic budget and the admin sorted in the right order, a move becomes a series of manageable steps rather than one chaotic weekend.

Below are the eight tips that make the biggest difference, a week-by-week timeline you can follow from eight weeks out to move-in day, and our most useful in-depth guides. One quick win to keep in mind throughout: moving is the perfect moment to switch energy supplier and shed the expensive deemed tariff you inherit at a new address.

Eight moving house tips that save the most hassle

Master these and you have covered 90% of what makes a move go smoothly.

01

Start eight weeks out

The single biggest stress-saver is time. Begin decluttering and gathering quotes two months before completion, not two weeks.

02

Get three removal quotes

Prices for the same move can vary by hundreds of pounds. Always get at least three written quotes and book mid-month, mid-week for the best rate.

03

Declutter before you pack

Never pay to move things you will throw away. Sell, donate or recycle anything you have not used in a year before a single box is filled.

04

Pack an essentials box

Kettle, mugs, tea, chargers, loo roll, snacks and a phone charger in one clearly-labelled box you carry yourself. You will thank yourself on night one.

05

Label boxes by room, not contents

Write the destination room and a number on every box. The removal team can then place each box where it belongs without asking.

06

Read the meters on day one

Photograph the gas, electricity and water meters the moment you arrive. It protects you from being billed for the previous occupier's usage.

07

Switch energy in week one

You inherit the previous tariff on a "deemed contract" at move-in, almost always the most expensive rate. Switch within two weeks to save the most.

08

Redirect your post

A Royal Mail redirection from your old address buys you breathing room to update everyone who matters without missing important letters.

The easiest saving of the whole move

Switch energy supplier in your first two weeks

When you move in you are placed on the previous occupier's tariff under a deemed contract, the most expensive rate going. Read the meters on day one, then compare every supplier and switch to lock in a saving of typically £200 to £300 a year.

Moving tips FAQ

The questions every mover asks

Around eight weeks before completion is the sweet spot. That gives you time to get three removal quotes, declutter, book time off and notify utilities and the council before you move. Use our moving house checklist to work backwards from your moving date.

Book mid-week and mid-month when removal firms are quieter, declutter so you move less, source free boxes from supermarkets, and pack yourself rather than paying for a packing service. For a part-load or a small flat, a man-and-van can be far cheaper than a full removals firm. See our cost of moving guide for a full breakdown.

The essentials are HMRC, your bank, the DVLA (licence and V5C), your employer, the council (council tax and electoral roll), your GP, your energy and water suppliers and your broadband provider. Our printable change of address checklist lists every name.

Take meter readings on day one and open an account with the existing supplier so you are billed correctly. Then compare tariffs and switch within the first two weeks, you start on an expensive deemed contract, and switching off it is the easiest saving a new mover can make.
