UK homes still copper-only (Ofcom)

UK broadband and TV is a confusing market. Openreach builds the wholesale lines, Virgin Media runs its own cable, altnets are racing to lay full-fibre, and on top of that sit dozens of retail ISPs and a fast-growing list of streaming services. This library breaks it all down into six topics: compare, how-to, technology, streaming, TV packages and business.

Below you can browse all 47 guides, filter by category and jump to the article you need. Whether you are switching ISP for the first time, picking a 4K TV box or rolling out broadband for a small business, there is a guide here that walks you through it.

6 questions to ask

How to use this UK broadband & TV library

Pick the right starting guide depending on the question you actually have, then drill into the sub-hub for related reading.

Looking for the cheapest plan?

Start in the Compare sub-hub. Read ‘Cheapest broadband’, ‘Broadband in my area’ and ‘No-contract broadband’ to see what is actually live at your postcode and price.

Switching for the first time?

Go straight to How-to. ‘Switch broadband provider’ explains One Touch Switch, ‘Broadband cancellation’ covers your old contract and ‘Find your landline number’ helps with porting.

Confused by fibre vs cable?

The Technology sub-hub has plain-English explainers: ‘Fibre vs cable’, ‘Openreach’, ‘Broadband without phoneline’ and ‘Download, upload and ping’.

Want a TV bundle?

TV packages and Streaming guides compare Sky, Virgin, BT TV, NOW, Netflix, Prime, Disney+ and the free UK services (BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, My5) before you pay for anything overlapping.

Running a small business?

The Business sub-hub covers leased lines, business broadband, gigabit vouchers, EPOS systems, guest wi-fi and the IT checklist every UK SME should run before signing a contract.

Just want a quick speed check?

Jump to ‘Broadband speed test’ in Technology. It explains how to test honestly, what download, upload and ping mean and when Ofcom rules force your ISP to compensate you.

UK switching savings in 2026

How much could you save by switching ISP?

Ofcom estimates UK customers who never switch pay roughly £180 a year more than those who shop around every contract renewal. Full-fibre rollout, altnet competition and the 2025 One Touch Switch rules make changing ISP faster and less risky than ever.

UK broadband & TV FAQ

The Selectra expert answers your questions

Community Fibre, TalkTalk and Vodafone regularly offer the cheapest UK full-fibre plans, typically £19 to £28 a month on a 24-month contract. Social tariffs from BT, Sky, Virgin Media and Hyperoptic drop pricing to around £12 to £20 for households on Universal Credit, Pension Credit or other qualifying benefits. Always run an availability check first because the cheapest plan depends on which networks reach your address.

Only in specific cases. You can switch without an early-termination fee if you are moving home and the new provider has no service at your new address, if your existing ISP has materially failed on speed or uptime, or if they raise the price mid-contract beyond what Ofcom rules allow. Otherwise you will normally pay the remaining monthly charges. From 2025, the One Touch Switch rules also force losing providers to refund any unused part of the month after you leave.

Openreach is BT Group’s wholesale network arm and runs the largest UK fixed-line broadband network (both FTTC copper-and-fibre and full-fibre FTTP). It sells capacity to retail ISPs like BT, Sky, TalkTalk, Vodafone and Plusnet. Altnets (CityFibre, Hyperoptic, Community Fibre, Gigaclear and others) build their own separate full-fibre networks in selected areas, usually offering symmetric gigabit speeds at lower prices. Both compete with Virgin Media’s legacy cable network.

Use Ofcom’s free Broadband Checker and the Openreach and Virgin Media availability tools to see which networks are live at your postcode. Around 80% of UK premises now have either Virgin Media cable or full-fibre FTTP from at least one provider, but coverage varies dramatically by street. If you only have FTTC, check whether an altnet has reached your road or whether 4G/5G home broadband from Three or EE makes sense as an alternative.

Yes, increasingly. Virgin Media cable, full-fibre FTTP, altnets and 4G/5G home broadband all work without a traditional landline. Older FTTC plans technically still ride on a copper voice line, but the line rental is bundled into the package price and no working phone is required. The UK PSTN switch-off in January 2027 will retire copper voice lines entirely; if you still need a home phone, your ISP will move you to Digital Voice over your broadband.
