Who were People’s Energy?

Founded in 2017, People’s Energy was a supplier trying to change the way energy is done in the UK. So, what made it stand out from the crowd? It aims to be, as its name suggests, a people-powered energy supplier, putting its customers and the planet first.

The energy company had no shareholders. The initial capital needed to create the company was crowdfunded by 2,200 members of the public. In 2018, these crowdfunders started to be paid back ahead of schedule (with reduced energy bills), showing the quick progression and early success of the company. Unfortunately, People's Energy found itself a casualty of increasing wholesale energy prices in late 2021 and stopped trading in September that year.

Peoples Energy was one of a number of smaller suppliers which collapsed due to increasing wholesale gas prices during late 2021. Its customers were moved to British Gas in September 2021 under Ofgem’s Supplier of Last Resort (SoLR) scheme.

1) I'm a People's Energy customer - will I continue receiving energy?

Due to Ofgem's Supplier of Last Resort (SoLR) scheme, customers will continue to receive gas and electricity. Any energy supplier that goes bankrupt has their licence revoked, and a bidding process is started to reassign their customers to another supplier, according to the scheme's terms. British Gas announced in late September 2021 that it would take on all Igloo customers.

When an energy supplier goes bankrupt, its website is usually taken down, so we recommend logging in to your customer portal as soon as possible and downloading any bills or statements so you have a written record of this information.

2) Will my energy bill increase?

Former Peoples Energy customers will be put on a deemed tariff rate that is protected by the energy price cap. These are some of the most expensive rates a supplier can offer, so we recommend either shopping around for a better deal or asking British Gas to switch you to a different tariff. You will not be required to pay exit fees if you choose to leave your appointed new supplier.

3) How can I contact my new supplier?

Visit contact British Gas to get in touch with your new supplier.

4) I’ve already switched supplier - will this still go through?

If you were already in the process of switching away from People's Energy, the switch should be completed, and any Direct Debit you had set up with People's Energy should be cancelled automatically. We still recommend that you confirm with your bank, just to be sure.

5) My People's Energy account was in credit. Will I get my money back?

Under the terms of the Ofgem SoLR scheme, all customer credit will still be honoured.

6) I was in debt with People's Energy. Will I still have to pay it back?

You'll still be expected to pay back any outstanding debts you had with People's Energy. British Gas will let you know whether they will take on your debt or if you will have to work out a payment plan with an administrator, a company that takes over a failing business.

7) I don’t want to be with British Gas. Can I switch to a different supplier?

Once the transfer from Peoples Energy to British Gas is complete, you are free to shop around for another supplier without incurring any exit fees or penalties. The energy supplier has a simple online account system where customers can manage their account 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Customers just need to log in to the online portal to access the following services:

  • Make payments and view payment history
  • Set up your direct debit
  • Submit meter readings
  • Manage your contact preferences
  • View and change your tariff

How do I access the People’s Energy login page?

Accessing the People’s Energy login page is quick and easy. There are a couple of different ways to find the page online, and we will break these down for you now.

  1. Type ‘People’s Energy’ into your search engine and select The People’s Energy Company. This will direct you to the People’s Energy homepage. Click on the pink button in the top right corner that says Log in. You will now be redirected to the People’s Energy login page.

  2. Type ‘People’s Energy login’ into your search engine. Click on the result that says The People’s Energy Company - Login. This will take you directly to the People’s Energy login page.

How do I log into my account?

Step 1: Access the People’s Energy login page online using the steps in the above section.

Step 2: In the space where it says Email, type in the email address that is linked to your account.

Step 3: In the space where it says Password, type the password associated with the account. If you have forgotten your password, click on where it says Forgotten your password? Click here. You will then need to enter your email address and go to your email account. Open the latest message from People’s Energy and click the link to reset your password.

Step 4: Click the pink button that says Log in.

Now you’re in!

People’s Energy reviews

People’s energy receives rave reviews from customers. It has a rating of 4.5 out of 5 on review site Trustpilot, which is pretty high for an energy supplier (some other providers have as little as 1 out of 5).

A particular area of praise expressed in People’s Energy reviews is the customer service, especially the helpfulness and friendliness of the call agents. A number of customers note that the call agents resolve issues and answer questions quickly, which is what you want from your energy supplier.

I have to say that People's Energy have the most helpful staff in the industry, a pleasant phone manner certainly goes a long way. In all, any queries I have had were resolved by the person I spoke to. You wouldn't get that with the "big six"! Andrew

When it comes to call wait time, we found that People's Energy takes on average two minutes and 30 seconds to answer the phone. While this is faster than other energy companies, there are numerous suppliers who answer the phone in under two minutes. However, as mentioned before, we did see in the reviews that customers tend to be pleased with the service they receive once they get through to a representative.

The energy supplier also performs well in the billing and account management area. Many customers report that they find it very easy to submit meter readings. Data collected by Citizens Advice also shows that 99% of customers have received at least one accurate bill in a year and all bills are delivered on time.

Overall, customers appear to really like the service they receive and welcome the new approach the supplier is working hard to deliver.

People’s Energy tariffs and prices

Since its creation, People’s Energy claims to have saved its customers £6.5 million, further claiming that every customer that’s made the switch has saved, on average, £150 a year on their energy bills.

It currently offers three types of tariffs: a fixed-rate tariff, a variable-rate tariff and a prepay tariff.

People's Energy tariffs are available as dual fuel (gas and electricity), electricity only and Economy 7.

Fixed-rate tariffs

A fixed-rate tariff guarantees that the unit rates and standard charges will stay the same for the duration of the contract. We always recommend choosing a fixed tariff (instead of a variable tariff) in order to avoid unexpected price increases.

Variable-rate tariff

People's Energy has one variable-rate tariff, named The People’s Tariff. A variable-rate tariff means your unit rates and standing charges can change over time. The good news is there is no contract length, so you can stay on the tariff for as long as you want, and therefore there are no exit fees if and when you choose to leave.

Like People’s Energy’s fixed-rate tariffs, The People’s Tariff is available as dual fuel, electric only or Economy 7 tariff.

Variable-rate tariffs can typically be a bit more expensive in the long run. However, you do get the flexibility of not having exit fees.

Prepayment tariffs

People’s Energy currently offers one tariff to customers on prepayment meters, the People's Prepay tariff.

Business tariffs

People's Energy has recently entered the business energy market and now offers energy tariffs to small and medium-sized companies. Like domestic tariffs, the supplier’s business tariffs use 100% renewable electricity and can be taken out as dual fuel or electric only.

In September 2019, the energy supplier launched its smart meter rollout with its ‘Pilot Stage’. This involved installing smart meters in the households of employees and family members in order to test its systems before launching the rollout to its wider customer base.

The second stage of the rollout, called the ‘Supported Installs Stage’ saw smart meters installed in the households of volunteers. Finally, the last stage is the full-scale rollout of People’s Energy smart meters, gradually getting all customers switched over to a smart meter in line with the government’s nationwide rollout plan.

Will your existing smart meter work with People’s Energy?

For customers with second generation smart meters (SMETS2s), you can make the switch and People’s Energy will be in touch about connecting your smart meter up to its system.

For customers with a first generation smart meter (SMETS1), it will take longer. Unlike SMETS2s, SMETS1s are not designed to work with different suppliers. The energy industry as a whole is currently working on getting SMETS1s to be compatible with SMETS2s.

You will have to wait for your meter to be transitioned before it will work with the energy provider's system. This doesn’t mean you can’t make the switch while you’re waiting. It just means that, until your meter becomes a SMETS2, it will function as a normal meter and not a smart meter with People’s Energy. In this case, you will need to submit your meter readings manually.

Fuel mix

Fuel mix refers to how a supplier’s electricity supply is sourced, such as natural gas, coal or renewable energy. Green energy is becoming more and more popular in the UK as customers are increasingly concerned with being more environmentally friendly.

Sticking to its aim to help the planet, People's Energy sources 100% of its electricity from renewables. The energy supplier does not produce its own energy but buys it from Smartest Energy, a company that partners with renewable generators to make 100% green energy available.

Using renewable energy sources when it comes to gas is not so simple as there is less renewable gas available. People’s Energy offers as much green gas as it can (combined with fossil fuel) and aims to push the agenda to improve green gas renewables. For example, it is in favour of tax breaks on biogas.

Warm Home Discount

Suppliers with 250,000 customers or more are required to provide the Warm Home Discount to eligible customers. As of yet, People’s Energy does not meet this threshold and so does not provide the scheme. If you qualify for the Warm Home Discount, you will need to be with a larger energy provider in order to receive it.

People’s Energy Summary

In its fuel mix and customer reviews, People’s Energy excels. Sticking to its values, the supplier seems committed to the environment and putting its customers first. It provides highly praised customer service and its tariffs are very reasonably priced.

As a smaller supplier, it cannot compete with some of the bigger and medium-sized providers in terms of extra services. It has gained points for its smart meter rollout, but unfortunately, it does not offer any energy grants, discounts, or smart energy technology. Overall, in the vital areas, People’s Energy performs well.
