Where does United Utilities water come from?

More than two-thirds of the water in the United Utilities coverage area comes from the Cumbrian reservoirs of Haweswater and Thirlmere in the Lake District, from the Pennines or Lake Vyrnwy in Wales. A quarter comes from rivers, such as the River Dee, and the rest is sourced from boreholes. The water from all of these sources goes through a thorough filtering process before reaching your Colne home to ensure its high quality.

Water Rates Colne

The type of water rates that apply to your home will depend on if your property is metered. You can easily find out whether your Colne water rates are metered or not by looking at your water bill. Homes with metered Colne water rates will have a meter number listed on their water bills, or the account number may start with UC for unmetered customers, and MC for metered customers.

If your home has a water meter, you will of course have metered water rates. This means that you must regularly provide your water supplier with water meter readings so that they can bill you according to your exact usage. Not doing so may risk receiving higher estimated bills.

If you've just moved in or you don't have a bill available, you can look outside your house or in the front garden for a meter (usually in a small box in the ground). Sometimes the meter may be located inside your house near the stop tap in the garage or kitchen.

Homes that are not metered will have the rateable value of the home instead. The rateable value part of your Colne water rates will have been determined by the local council in the 90s and will probably not have changed significantly since then. This uses factors such as the size of the property and the availability of services to create an estimated consumption value, which is in turn used to create your water bill.

The average water rates Colne residents are being charged result in an average water bill of around £418 a year. This amount combines both water supply and sewerage costs.

Colne Water Hardness

Colne water hardness is rated as soft water. While rainwater itself is soft, water hardness can change as it progresses through the water cycle. Due to the way water filters through rocks in the United Utilities supply area, Colne's water picks up minerals, such as magnesium or calcium, on the way to your tap. The higher the mineral value of water, the harder it is rated, and the less effective it is overall. Your waters soft hardness rating is a great thing for you, as homes with a soft water hardness rating tend to have more efficient energy bills, their taps and sinks are much less prone to lime scaling, and their water is more effective at tasks such as cleaning when compared to homes in hard water areas.

Can you drink the water in Colne?

Yes! You can drink the water in Colne. The UK Drinking Water Inspectorate has scored Colne's water quality a 99.96% in overall mean zonal compliance, meaning that your water is safe to drink. It is not necessary to boil or filter Colne's water to make it potable.

If you notice a change in taste or smell of Colne's water this may be due to one of the following reasons:

  1. Chlorination helps to keep the pipe network clean, but can subtly influence your waters taste occasionally.
  2. Plumbing can contribute to the taste of your household water, adding metallic, salty or rubbery hints. Repairs on water pipes or taps for example can contribute to changes in your waters attributes.
  3. Seasonal changes in water characteristics can infuse Colne's water with an earthy smell or taste.

If you are worried about your water's taste, smell, appearance or feel that it may not be safe to consume, you should not hesitate to contact United Utilities.

Colne Water Problems

Colne water problems can include anything from burst water mains or flooding to no water in your home. This is why you should make sure you know what to do and who to contact regarding water emergencies.

If you notice a water leak or flooding outside your Colne property, you need to do one of the following:

  1. If you aren't at home, reach out to United Utilities on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or simply give them a call.
  2. If you are near a computer, go to the "report a leak" section of the United Utilities website and fill out the online form. Additionally, you can check out what known issues there may be in the area, and find emergency contact information if appropriate.

Colne Water Discolouration

If the water in your home is discoloured, the issue might be a United Utilities issue impacting Colne.

  1. Changes to the colour of the water in Colne may happen after a burst pipe has been repaired
  2. Or, United Utilities could have been carrying out upgrade work on the pipes in Colne.
  3. Water Discolouration is not harmful and can often be cleared by running the cold water tap until it becomes clear.
  4. If there is no improvement after trying this, you can contact United Utilities for assistance.

Colne No Water

If you have no water in your home, you need to find out if the issue is to do with your home plumbing or if it is a Northumbrian Water outage impacting the area.

  1. Check that your stop tap is open. If this is open but no water is flowing to your taps, then the issue will be related to your supplier.
  2. Check the "Contact Us" sections of the United Utilities website for any information explaining why you have no water and when you can expect your water service to resume.
  3. Ask your neighbours whether they have the same issue as you. If they aren't, then the problem will most likely be due to the plumbing of your own home, and you may need to contact a plumber.
  4. If you have no water, is it only no cold water or no hot water? If you have cold water but no hot water, the issue will be with your home plumbing and not the water company.

If there is no cold water, not even a trickle, contact South East Water for assistance.
