Where does United Utilities water come from?

More than two-thirds of the water in the United Utilities coverage area comes from the Cumbrian reservoirs of Haweswater and Thirlmere in the Lake District, from the Pennines or Lake Vyrnwy in Wales. A quarter comes from rivers, such as the River Dee, and the rest is sourced from boreholes. The water from all of these sources goes through a thorough filtering process before reaching your Congleton home to ensure its high quality.

Water Rates Congleton

There are two primary forms of billing in the UK, unmetered, and metered. You can find out which apply to your home by looking at your water bill. Homes that have a water meter will have a meter number listed on their water bills. Alternately the account number may also start with MC for metered customers, or UC for unmetered customers, depending on the supplier.

If you don't have a bill, you try to find a meter by searching around your home. A water meter would usually be located either next to the water stop tap (in the kitchen or garage), or it could also be in the garden (look for a small box set into the ground).

If you have a water meter, this means that your supplier will bill you according to the exact usage of your property. As such, it is important that you provide them with regular meter reads. Not doing so could risk inaccurate estimated bills.

Homes that are not metered will have the rateable value of the home instead. This value was based on factors such as the size of the property, the area in which it is situated and the availability of local services to create an estimated consumption value. This value is then taken and applied to your bills.

The average water rates Congleton water residents are being charged result in an average water bill of around £419 a year. This amount combines both sewerage costs and water supply.

If you aren't sure if water meters are the right choice for you, take a read through our water meter guide to learn more about them, and how you can get one installed.

Congleton Water Hardness

Congleton water hardness is rated as hard. While rainwater itself is relatively soft, water hardness can change through the water cycle. Due to the way water filters through rocks in the United Utilities water supply area, Congleton picks up minerals, such as magnesium or calcium, on the way to your tap.

Congleton's hard water rating means that the water in your home will lead to scaling in kettles, sinks, dishwashers and loos. There are ways to mitigate hard water furring or scaling in Congleton.

  1. Baths, sinks and toilets - Use an acidic sanitiser regularly (available in local shops) to clean susceptible surfaces in order to clear limescale deposits.
  2. Dishwashers - Take advantage of the built-in water softener. Make sure you regularly top off it off with dishwasher salt in the appropriate compartment.
  3. Kettles - Do not overfill your kettle with water, using only as much water as you need. Make sure that you clean your kettle by half-filling and adding two tablespoons of white vinegar, leaving it for four hours in order to loosen scale build-up. Rinse and repeat to remove scale.

Can you drink the water in Congleton?

Yes! You can drink the water in Congleton without worry. The water quality of Congleton was scored at 99.96% in overall mean zonal compliance by the UK Drinking Water Inspectorate. It is not necessary to filter, boil or otherwise alter Congleton's water to make it potable.

Mild changes in the taste and smell of your water can sometimes occur. Here are a few examples of why this might happen:

  1. Chlorination is used to remove harmful bacteria from the pipe network, and is harmless to health
  2. Plumbing can also contribute to the taste of the water in your household, adding metallic, salty or rubbery hints. If for example, you have had a water pipe repair, this could influence your water.
  3. Seasonal changes in water characteristics can infuse the water in Congleton with an earthy taste or smell. As your water source can change through the year, so too each source has its unique mineral composition, which can influence your water.

If you have questions about your water quality, or feel that it may not be safe to consume, you should not hesitate to contact United Utilities, who will provide further assistance.

Congleton Water Problems

The type of water-related problems that you may encounter are various, stretching from burst water mains to flooding or even having no water in your home. This is why it is important that you know what to do and who to contact regarding water emergencies.

If you notice a water leak or flooding outside your Congleton property, you need to do one of the following:

  1. You can reach out to United Utilities easily anywhere by shooting them over a message on social media, or by giving them a call.
  2. If you are near a computer, go to the "Incident Check" or "Report a problem" section of the United Utilities website to see if there are any known issues and when they are expected to be resolved, or follow their troubleshooting guide.

Congleton No Water

If you have no water in your home, you need to find out if the issue is to do with your home plumbing or a United Utilities outage impacting Congleton.

  1. Check that your stop tap is open. If this is closed then this would prevent water from flowing in your home.
  2. Check the "Diagnose, report and resolve" sections of the United Utilities website and follow their step-by-step guide to further understand or escalate the issue.
  3. Ask your neighbours whether they have the same issue as you. If their water is fine, then this suggests that the problem lays with your homes plumbing.
  4. If you have no water, is it only no cold water or no hot water? If you have cold water but no hot water, the issue will be with your home plumbing and not the water company, seeing as the water supply to the property is still functional.

If there is no cold water, not even a trickle, contact United Utilities Water for assistance, as this indicates a supply issue.
