Where does Minster water come from?

The vast majority (70%) of water in the Southern Waters supply area is sourced from the underground chalk aquifer. 23% comes from surface-water sources such as rivers, while the remaining 7% comes from reservoirs.

Water Rates Minster

Having a water meter will dictate the forms of rates that apply to your home. Unsure if your home has a water meter? You can easily find out whether your Minster water rates are metered by taking a look at your water bill. Homes with metered Minster water rates will have a meter number listed on their water bills. The account number may also start with MC for metered customers, and UC for unmetered customers.

If you've just moved in or you don't have a bill available, you can look outside your house or in the front garden for a meter (look for a small box sunk into the ground). Sometimes the meter may be located inside your house near the stop tap in the kitchen or garage.

If you have a water meter, this means that your supplier will bill you according to your exact usage. As such, in order that your supplier knows how much to bill you, it is important to provide regular water meter readings. Not doing so could risk inaccurate or high water bills.

Homes that are not metered will have the rateable value of the home instead. The rateable value part of your Minster water rates is based on factors such as your property size, location, and the availability of services. This is then used to create an estimated water consumption value, which is then used to create your bill.

If you need help deciding if getting a water meter is the right choice for you, check out Selectra's essential guide to water meters.

The average water rates Minster residents are being charged result in an average water bill of around £418 a year. This amount combines both water supply and sewerage costs.

Minster Water Hardness

Minster water hardness is rated as hard water. The higher the value of minerals such as magnesium or calcium present in your water, the harder your water will be. Water hardness can vary throughout the year and from region to region due to the different sources that providers use for their water supply.

Minster's hard water rating means that your water will be more inclined to cause scaling in kettles, sinks, dishwashers and toilets, and your water will be less effective at tasks like cleaning clothes. Here are a few ways to mitigate hard water furring or scaling in Minster.

  1. Kettles - Do not overfill your kettle with water, using only as much water as you need. Make sure that you clean your kettle by half-filling and adding two tablespoons of white vinegar, leaving it for four hours in order to loosen scale build-up. Rinse and repeat to remove scale.
  2. Clothing - Powder-based detergents should be avoided due to them being less effective at resisting water hardness and minerals. Using liquid-based detergents, particularly those focused on softening clothes and water would be much more beneficial. Additionally, Clean your washing machine by adding baking soda and white vinegar directly into the empty drum and setting it to a hot wash. Make sure to wipe down the drum thoroughly afterwards. This process limits and removes limescale build-up.
  3. Dishwashers - Take advantage of the built-in water softener. Make sure you regularly top off it off with dishwasher salt in the appropriate compartment.
  4. Baths, sinks and toilets - Use an acidic sanitiser regularly to clean susceptible surfaces in order to clear limescale deposits.

Can you drink the water in Minster?

Of course! Minster water meets the highest standards to make the water safe to drink. The UK Drinking Water Inspectorate has scored Minster water quality a 99.96% in overall mean zonal compliance, meaning that your water is safe to drink. It is not necessary to boil or filter Minster water to make it potable.

If you notice a change in taste or smell of Minster water this may be due to one of the following reasons:

  1. Chlorination is a safe way to ensure hygiene throughout the pipe network. Minimal amounts of chlorine help to eliminate the presence of harmful bacteria, and is closely monitored at all times.
  2. Seasonal changes can infuse Minster water with an earthy smell or taste. As your waters source can change throughout the year, so too will its mineral composition.
  3. Plumbing can also contribute to the taste of your household water, adding metallic, salty or rubbery hints.

If you have questions about your water's taste, smell or appearance, you should not hesitate to contact Southern Water.

Minster Water Problems

Minster water problems can include anything from a burst water main or flooding to no water in your home. This is why you should make sure you know what to do and who to contact regarding water emergencies.

If you notice a water leak or flooding outside your Minster property, you need to do one of the following:

  1. If you are out and about, you can easily reach Southern Water by sending them a message on social media, or by giving them a call.
  2. If you are near a computer, go to the "report a leak" section of Southern Water and fill out the online form to report the issue.

Minster No Water

If you have no water in your home, before calling your supplier you need to find out if the issue is to do with your home plumbing or if it is a Southern Water outage impacting Minster.

  1. Check the "In Your Area" sections of the Southern Water website for any information explaining why you have no water.
  2. Ask your neighbours whether they have the same issue as you. If they don't, then this suggests the problem may lay with your property rather than the supply.
  3. Check that your stop tap is open. This must be in the open position to allow water to flow to your house.
  4. If you have no water, is it only no cold water, or no hot water? If you have cold water but no hot water, the issue will be with your home plumbing and not the water company

If there is no cold water, not even a trickle, contact Southern Water for assistance.

Minster Water Discolouration

If the water in your home is discoloured, the issue might be a Southern Water issue impacting Minster.

  1. Changes to the colour of the water in Minster may happen after a burst pipe has been repaired
  2. Or, Southern Water could have been carrying out upgrade work on the pipes in Minster
  3. Water Discolouration is not harmful and can often be cleared by running the cold water tap until it becomes clear
  4. If there is no improvement after trying this, you can contact Southern Water for assistance.
