SP Distribution (Scottish Power)



SP Distribution, and therefore SP Energy Networks, is part of the subsidiary Scottish Power, which is owned by Spanish energy giants Iberdrola. It is the Distribution Network Operator (DNO) for Central and Southern Scotland, Merseyside, Cheshire, North Wales and North Shropshire, which means it is responsible for making the electricity supply reach the houses of the areas they are responsible for. They have 40,000km of overhead lines (which is once around the world!), 65,000km of underground cables and 30,000 substations (one for every 100 customers). Their distribution area covers three of the largest cities in the UK: Glasgow; Edinburgh; and Liverpool, making up around 1.6m (46%) customers. Their distribution network is the employer of around 2,600 people, including field staff, engineers, technical specialists, customer service and support staff.

What is a substation?A substation is where electricity passes through in order to be reduced in voltage.
