What is download speed?
Download speed is how quickly your connection pulls data from the internet to your device. It governs the activities that consume data: streaming Netflix and YouTube, loading web pages, downloading films, app updates and game patches. It is reported in megabits per second (Mbps), and on full-fibre packages also in gigabits per second (Gbps, where 1 Gbps = 1000 Mbps).
Typical UK download speeds in 2026
The UK has moved decisively away from copper-only ADSL. As of July 2026, Openreach reports that full-fibre (FTTP) reaches more than 75% of UK premises, with Virgin Media cable, Hyperoptic, CityFibre and Community Fibre adding further coverage. The headline speeds you will see advertised are:
- FTTC (copper to the cabinet): up to about 80 Mbps download, capped by line length;

How much download speed do you actually need?

What is upload speed?
Upload speed is how fast your connection sends data the other way: from your device to the internet. It is also measured in Mbps. Upload matters every time you appear in a video call, post a photo to social media, back up to iCloud or OneDrive, share large files, stream on Twitch or game online (where your console sends your inputs to the server).
Why upload is usually slower than download
On copper FTTC and most cable packages, upload is heavily asymmetric: an 80/20 Mbps FTTC line gives you 80 Mbps down and only 20 Mbps up. The cabling was designed for an era when households mostly consumed content rather than produced it. Full-fibre (FTTP) closes the gap. Many altnet packages from Hyperoptic and Community Fibre offer symmetrical 1 Gbps up and down, and Openreach FTTP packages typically deliver 110 to 220 Mbps upload on a 900 Mbps download line.
How much upload speed do you need?
For most households 20 Mbps upload is enough. If you regularly work from home, run cloud backups overnight or live stream, aim for 50 Mbps or a symmetrical full-fibre package.

What is ping (latency)?
Ping, also called latency, is the round-trip time in milliseconds (ms) for a small data packet to travel from your device to a server and back. While Mbps tells you the capacity of the pipe, ping tells you how fast the pipe reacts. A 1 Gbps line with a poor 120 ms ping will still feel sluggish in online games and laggy in video calls, even though films and downloads fly.
Ping depends mostly on three things: the type of line (FTTP is fastest, mobile 4G/5G is most variable), the distance to the server you are talking to, and the local Wi-Fi quality. A wired full-fibre connection to a UK server is consistently in single digits.

How to lower your ping
- Use an Ethernet cable instead of Wi-Fi for gaming and video calls;
- Close background apps and cloud sync that compete for the line;
- Pick a UK or Western European game server rather than a US or Asian one;
- Restart the router if ping has drifted upward over the day;
- Upgrade from FTTC to FTTP if available at your address.
How to measure your download, upload and ping
Any reputable online speed test reports all three metrics in a single run, usually in under 30 seconds. The most trusted tools are Speedtest by Ookla, Fast.com (run by Netflix) and your own provider's official test, which BT, Sky and Virgin Media use to diagnose faults.
For a meaningful result, follow these basic rules: plug a laptop or desktop into the router with an Ethernet cable, close streaming apps and downloads, then run the test three times spread across the day (morning, evening peak around 8pm, late evening). Compare the average against the minimum guaranteed speed in your contract.
