The Selectra expert answers your questions
Text PAC to 65075 from your current SIM. Your old provider must reply within 60 seconds with a Porting Authorisation Code valid for 30 days. Give that PAC to your new network when you sign up and they will transfer your number within one working day. The process is free, governed by Ofcom and works for every UK provider.
An eSIM is an embedded SIM built into your phone, activated by scanning a QR code from your network. There is no physical card to insert or post. Almost every UK network now supports eSIM (EE, O2, Vodafone, Three, Sky, Tesco, BT, Lyca and giffgaff among others), and most modern iPhones, Samsung Galaxy and Pixel handsets are compatible. Read our full eSIM guide for setup steps.
5G is the fifth generation of mobile network technology: faster download speeds (typically 200-400 Mbps in UK cities), lower latency and more capacity in busy areas. Whether it’s worth paying extra depends on your postcode and use case. In London, Manchester and most large UK cities you will see meaningful gains. In rural areas, 4G coverage matters far more than 5G. See our what is 5G guide for current operator rollout.
A dual-SIM phone holds two active mobile numbers at once: useful for keeping work and personal lines separate, swapping between UK and overseas SIMs without changing phones, or running one number for calls and another for data. Modern iPhones use one physical SIM plus one eSIM; many Android phones include two physical slots. Read our dual-SIM phones guide for the best UK models.
Yes, for most buyers. A UK refurbished handset is professionally inspected, restored to working order and resold with a 12-month warranty, typically at 15 to 30% off new prices. Grade A units look and feel like new; grade B and C show light cosmetic wear but work identically. Avoid sellers without a clear warranty or returns policy. Full breakdown in our refurbished pros and cons guide.
