Engineering maps predict signal, they don’t guarantee it. A wall of metal-foil insulation, a basement flat or a tree-lined back garden can knock 4G down to nothing even on a “great” postcode.

Before locking into a 24-month BT Mobile plan, buy a 30-day SIM from any EE-network MVNO (Lycamobile, 1pMobile, BT Mobile itself if it offers a 1-month deal) and use it at every place you spend regular time. If the SIM works there, BT Mobile will, because they all sit on the same EE masts.

How good is BT Mobile coverage?

It is EE coverage. BT Mobile customers see the same 4G and 5G footprint as any EE customer at the same postcode. Ofcom consistently rates EE first in the UK for overall coverage, average download speed and customer experience. The honest exception is rural and indoor coverage in older buildings; if your home is on the edge of EE's map, signal can be patchy regardless of the brand on your bill.

Does BT Mobile have 5G?

Yes, on most SIM-only plans from £10 a month upwards. EE's 5G now reaches more than 85% of UK premises outdoors, with active deployment in every major UK city and most large towns. You need a 5G-capable phone and to be in a 5G postcode for the upgrade to be visible; otherwise BT Mobile falls back to 4G seamlessly.

Is BT Mobile better than O2 or Vodafone for coverage?

On the Ofcom Connected Nations reports, EE (the BT Mobile host) wins on average download speed, overall reliability and rural 4G. Vodafone and O2 are close behind. Three trails on 4G but is competitive on unlimited-data plans. The right answer is always postcode-specific: in some valleys O2 wins, in some city blocks Three's 5G is fastest. Always check your own home and work postcodes before signing.

What do I do if BT Mobile signal is poor at home?

Three options. (1) Turn on Wi-Fi Calling on your phone, so calls and texts route through your home broadband. (2) If you are on BT Halo, request a free BT Mini Hub as part of the signal guarantee. (3) If signal is still unworkable after both fixes, you can exit your BT Mobile contract under Ofcom rules without an early-termination fee, since BT cannot deliver the service.

Does BT Mobile roaming work in the EU?

Yes. Most current BT Mobile SIM-only plans include EU roaming under a 12 GB fair-use cap per monthly bill cycle. UK calls, texts and data work as if at home in EU/EEA countries. Beyond 12 GB of data in a cycle, BT charges a per-MB surcharge. Older plans (pre-2022) may charge from day one in the EU, so check My BT before travelling.
