Frequently asked questions

About Selectra, switching supplier and your rights as a customer.

Yes. Calling our energy team and using our guides is completely free for customers. We are paid commission by our supplier partners when a switch goes through, which never changes the price you pay. The commission does not influence our recommendations.

No. We work with a carefully selected panel of partners chosen for their customer service, green credentials and value for money. Our editorial guides still cover the whole market so you can make an informed choice.

On average 15 to 17 days for electricity and 16 to 18 days for gas. That includes the 14-day cooling-off period, during which you can change your mind. After that, the switch itself usually completes within a week.

No. There is no break in your gas or electricity supply during a switch. Nobody needs to visit your home to replace meters, pipes or cables, and you will not experience any power cut.

If you have been in debt for less than 28 days you can usually switch, and the balance is added to your final bill. If the debt is older than 28 days you will need to clear it first, or agree a repayment plan, before switching. On a prepayment meter you can still switch under the Debt Assignment Protocol, provided you owe less than £500.

Yes. Unless your landlord pays the energy bill directly, you have the right as a tenant to choose your own supplier. It is good practice to let your landlord know before you switch.

Older smart meters can lose their smart functionality after a switch and revert to manual readings, but the meter itself keeps working. Newer SMETS2 meters keep their smart functionality across suppliers. Ask the new supplier before you switch if you are unsure.

About us

Who runs Selectra UK?

Selectra was founded in 2007 by Aurian de Maupeou and Xavier Pinon to help French customers save on their energy bills when the market opened to competition. We arrived in the UK in 2017 and now help thousands of households every year sort their gas, electricity and broadband.

Getting the best deal on household bills should not be a chore. We compare tariffs, explain the small print and arrange the switch, all without charging the customer a penny.
