Where does Anglian Water's water come from?

Around 50% of the water provided to your home comes from underground sources such as aquifers and boreholes, while the remainder comes from surface water sources like rivers and reservoirs. The location that your water comes from can change throughout the year as rainfall levels increase or decrease, but no matter where your water comes from, Anglian Water will always ensure that it is regularly tested and safe before it reaches your home.

Water Rates Wisbech

The form of water rates that apply to your Wisbech home will vary depending on if your home is metered, or unmetered. The easiest way to find out if you have a water meter is to take a look at a water bill. Homes that have metered rates will have a meter serial number listed on their water bills. If you cannot see the meter number, some suppliers will use the account number to indicate the metered status of the property. For example, if your account number starts with MC (Metered Customer), this would suggest that you have a water meter. If the account number starts with UC (Unmetered Customer), this would suggest that your home does not have a water meter.

Alternately if you do not have a bill available, you can look around your property for a water meter. These would usually be installed at the earliest point that water enters the property, which depending on the property type would be either next to the water stop tap (Often in kitchens or garages), or outside in the garden. If you find a water meter, then your home will have metered rates.

Homes that are not metered won't have metered rates, but they will have the rateable value of the home instead. The rateable value part of your Wisbech water rates will have been determined by the local council in the 90s and most likely will not have changed since. This rate is subject to review every five years and takes into account factors such as property size, location, occupancy and the availability of local services to calculate a consumption value that is then applied to your bill.

The average water rates Wisbech water residents are being charged result in an average water bill of around £341 a year. This amount combines both water supply and sewerage costs.

Wisbech Water Hardness

Wisbech water hardness is rated as very hard. While rainwater itself is relatively soft, water hardness can change through the water cycle. Due to the way water filters through rocks in Anglian Water's supply area, Wisbech picks up a large number of minerals such as magnesium or calcium on the way to your tap, which alters its hardness rating.

Hard water means that your taps and pipes will be inclined to develop limescale, and your water will be less efficient at tasks such as cleaning clothes or dishes. Here are a few things that you can do to lessen the impact of hard water in your home.

  1. Kettles: Do not overfill your kettle with water. You should also clean your kettle by half-filling with water and adding two tablespoons of white vinegar, leaving it for four hours to loosen scale build-up. Rinse and repeat to remove the scale.
  2. Baths, sinks and toilets: Use an acidic sanitiser regularly to clean susceptible surfaces in order to clear limescale deposits
  3. Dishwashers: Take advantage of the built-in water softener. Make sure you regularly top it off with dishwasher salt in the appropriate compartment.
  4. Clothing - Liquid detergents should be used over powder detergents due to them being more effective at resisting water hardness and preventing soap scum. Additionally, you should clean your washing machine by adding baking soda and white vinegar directly into the empty drum and setting it to a hot wash. Make sure to wipe down the drum thoroughly afterwards. This process limits and removes limescale build-up.

Can you drink the water in Wisbech?

Yes! You can drink the water in Wisbech. The water in Wisbech was scored at 99.69% in overall mean zonal compliance by the Drinking Water Inspectorate, meaning that its water quality exceeds minimum requirements, and is perfectly safe to drink without having to boil or filter further to make it potable.

If you notice a change in taste or smell of Wisbech Water this may be due to one of the following reasons:

  1. Chlorination prevents the build-up of potentially harmful bacteria or other forms of natural pollutants. The amount of chlorine in the water network is closely monitored at all times, and does not pose a health risk.
  2. Seasonal changes in water characteristics can infuse Wisbech Water with an earthy smell or taste.
  3. Plumbing can contribute to the taste of your household water, adding metallic, salty or rubbery hints. If for example, you have recently replaced a water pipe in your home, the introduction of this new material could potentially influence the flavour of your water.

If you would like to learn more about the quality of your water or you have concerns about its safety, you should not hesitate to contact Anglian Water who will be able to provide further assistance.

Wisbech Water Problems

The water problems that Wisbech faces can potentially range from a burst water pipe, failure of supply or even flooding. This is why it is important that you take the time to familiarize yourself with what you should do and who you need to contact in the event of experiencing water issues.

If you notice flooding or a water leak outside your Wisbech property, you need to do one of the following:

  1. If you aren't at home, you can contact Anglian Water on social media to easily and quickly let them know about a problem. If the issue is more urgent or is a safety risk, you should phone them on the most appropriate phone number for the issue, which can easily be found on their website.
  2. If you are near a computer, go to the "Water and sewerage queries" section of the Anglian Water website. From there, you can request a callback, find the most appropriate contact number or use their chatbot feature to troubleshoot.

Wisbech No Water

If you have no water in your home, it is important to find out if the issue is an Anglian Water supply outage, or if your home's plumbing is causing the issue.

  1. Ask your neighbours whether they have the same issue as you.
  2. Check that your stop tap is open.
  3. Check the "Contact Us" or "Report an issue" section of the Anglian Water website. From here you can find useful advice on how to proceed, report an issue via their online form, or find the most appropriate contact number.
  4. If you have no water, is it only no cold water or no hot water? If you have no hot water but have cold water still, the issue will be with your home plumbing and not the water company.

If there is no cold water, not even a trickle, contact Anglian Water for assistance.
