Cambridge Water supplies water to over 350,000 customers in Cambridge and surrounding towns such as Ramsey, Balsham and Melbourn. This private water company has changed hands from overseas holding companies to HSBC and finally to its current owners, South Staffordshire PLC. It's worth noting that while Cambridge Water handles drinking water supply, wastewater and sewerage in the area is the responsibility of Anglian Water.

Cambridge Water Bill

Your Cambridge Water bill will look different depending on whether you have a water meter or not. Either way, you will be able to see your water rates in detail no matter the type of water billing method your home is under.

For metered properties, be aware that water bills work differently than energy bills. For starters, water standing charges change depending on the size or capacity of your meter. The larger the meter, the more you pay.

For Cambridge Water, metered water standing charges can range from around £40 to over £180 yearly for the largest water meters. However, don't take our word for it, since these figures can change from one year to the next. Your Cambridge Water bill will tell you the size of the water meter you have and how much your water standing charge is. Depending on where your water meter is located, you may also have to pay a garden water meter standing charge.

In addition, you will also have to pay sewerage charges. Cambridge Water collects these on behalf of Anglian Water - the company in charge of wastewater and sewerage in the area.

If your home does not have a water meter (likely if built before 1990), you will pay a fixed amount for your water - no matter how much you use. Cambridge Water calculates this by multiplying the unmetered water charge by the rateable value of your home. Rateable value is just a fancy way of saying how much you would pay for rent for an equivalent property in the area back when the local council determined this (it hasn't changed since the introduction of water meters for new builds). In addition to this, you will also pay the unmetered standing charge for the year, which at the time of writing is under £30.

Essentially, the same thing happens for wastewater charges, except that money goes to Anglian Water - even though it's collected by Cambridge Water.
