Bristol Water supplies half a million homes and businesses with clean water across Bristol, parts of Bath, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire. Wastewater and sewerage are not handled by Bristol Water but rather Wessex Water, another water company that also handles water sanitation services in addition to water supply.

Who Owns Bristol Water?

Bristol Water is owned by three different companies which each have a share in the company. iCON Infrastructure Partners III owns 50%, iCON Infrastructure Partners III owns 30%, and Itochu Corporation of Japan owns 20%. Bristol Water has never been out of private ownership.

Are Bristol Water and Wessex Water the same?Bristol Wessex Water is not a single company. Bristol Water and Wessex Water are two separate companies. Confusion stems from the fact that the Bristol Water supply area overlaps with where Wessex Water handles sewerage and wastewater operations. So while Bristol Water supplies clean water on one end, Wessex Water handles wastewater out the other end for many customers.

If you can't login, not all is lost, you have multiple options to recover your account. First up is the password hint you set up with the account. If you can't remember the email address linked to your account, you will have to enter your customer reference number, found on your Bristol Water bill, and your mailing address postcode. With those details, you'll see what email address you used for the Bristol Water Login.

Bristol Water Problems

Bristol Water problems can occur for a variety of reasons. If you have no water in your home, these are the problem-solving steps Bristol Water recommends.

  1. Check your pipes: Is there water coming out of your kitchen tap and nowhere else? Could your pipes be frozen? Could there be a leak? If there is a leak, you need to find your stop tap and call a plumber.
  2. Check if neighbours are having the same issue: This is the fastest way to see if there is an outage in your area or if the lack of water is limited to your home.
  3. Check the Bristol Water website or social media for any planned work or known issues in your area that would explain the lack of water.

Doing these steps before contacting Bristol Water about the problem can save you more time. However, if you have exhausted the above options, you should contact Bristol Water about the problem. Their leak line is probably your best bet: 0345 702 3797.

Check out our guide if you’ve just moved and have no water in your house.

Bristol Water Complaints

If you need to lodge a complaint with Bristol Water, you should first contact Bristol Water for them to try and resolve it themselves. Unfortunately, you can’t switch water suppliers, so you should give them at least 8 weeks to get things sorted if they don’t get it done in the first try.

If Bristol Water doesn’t get back to you during that time, or you are unsatisfied with their response, you should escalate your complaint with the Consumer Council for Water (CCW). The CCW is an official body that deals with water complaints against water suppliers.

If the CCW fails you or your complaint becomes long term, then you can take it to the Water Redress Scheme (WATRS). Do not take your complaint to the water regulator Ofwat since they will be unable to help you.

The water quality in the UK varies according to which region you live in. The quality depends on the levels of calcium present in your water. The higher the level of calcium, the harder the water.

Bristol is a very hard water area, meaning that there are high levels of calcium in the water. These levels are around 232 mg of calcium per litre.

If you live in Bristol, you might want to consider getting a water filter to make the water nicer to drink.
