National Grid is the area gas distributor for around 10.9 million people, encompassing some of the UK's largest metropolitan areas; to name just a few: North London; Manchester; Birmingham; and Liverpool. National Grid’s extensive network contains 7660km of high pressure pipeline. They are the owner and operator of the distribution network that flows through East Midlands, West Midlands, North West England and East of England (including North London). However, on 10th November 2015 the company announced that they would be selling a majority stake in their gas distribution business and are currently in talks with Chinese-Australian consortium ‘Macquarie’ who have valued the business at £13.8 million including debt.
