Electric Ireland NI tariffs

Electric Ireland NI has stopped offering domestic tariffs in the UK. Last update: May 2026. Read what this means for you and what to do next.

Market exit

Electric Ireland NI is leaving the Northern Ireland residential market

In May 2024, ESB announced that Electric Ireland would withdraw from the Northern Ireland residential electricity market. All remaining Electric Ireland NI residential customers — both Credit and Keypad — will be automatically transferred to Power NI on 31 May 2026. Electric Ireland NI has stopped accepting new domestic customers; the four "Simpler Living" tariffs (Standard Keypad, Keypad Economy 7, Standard Billpay and Billpay Economy 7) remain in force only for existing customers, until the transfer date.

After 31 May 2026, Electric Ireland will continue to supply business customers in Northern Ireland and remain ESB Group's primary supply brand in the Republic of Ireland — only the NI residential business is winding down.

Transfer date

31 May 2026

What to do

Credit (Billpay) customers

No action needed. Your supply continues as normal on the transfer date. You'll receive a final Electric Ireland NI bill (any credit balance is refunded automatically) and your first Power NI bill picks up where it left off. Power NI's default credit tariff is the UREGNI-regulated tariff, which is reviewed by the Utility Regulator and currently sits below Electric Ireland's final published rates.

Keypad customers

Your Electric Ireland keypad number stops working on 31 May 2026 — you need a new Power NI keypad number to keep topping up. Power NI is issuing replacement numbers four ways: online (from 9 a.m. on the transfer date), email, post (delivered within 5 working days) or phone on 0800 011 3435 (24/7 from 9 a.m. on 31 May). Your supply will not be cut off if you take a few days — Power NI guarantees keypad continuity during the handover.

Want to switch elsewhere instead

You have until 30 May 2026 to switch to another NI supplier (SSE Airtricity, Click Energy, Budget Energy or firmus energy where the Phoenix Gas footprint applies). After that, your account will already be a Power NI account and any further switch starts from there. Either way, there are no exit fees.

Things to know

Exit fees
None. Electric Ireland NI is waiving all exit and termination fees for the closure.
Final bill
Sent within 6 weeks of the transfer. Any credit balance is refunded to your bank account on file; any outstanding balance remains yours to settle.
Direct debits
Cancel your Electric Ireland NI direct debit only after you've received the final bill. Power NI will set up a new direct debit if you ask them to.
Meter readings
Submit a final reading to Electric Ireland NI in the week before 31 May 2026 to ensure your closing bill and your opening Power NI bill are accurate. NIE Networks does not need to visit the property.
NI Economy 7 (day/night) customers
Your day/night meter and split rates transfer with you. Power NI's equivalent is the Economy 7 tariff, with a similar structure (cheaper night rate, higher day rate, single standing charge).
Phoenix Gas dual fuel
If you held a gas account with Electric Ireland NI on the Phoenix Gas network, that account is being closed alongside the electricity account. You'll need to choose a new gas supplier (firmus energy, SSE Airtricity Gas, or another Phoenix-area supplier) before 31 May 2026.
Where to escalate
For complaints about the transfer, escalate after 8 weeks to the Consumer Council Northern Ireland. The Utility Regulator (UREGNI) sets the licence framework but does not investigate individual disputes.

Common questions

Electric Ireland NI transfer — frequently asked questions

If you pay by direct debit or monthly bill, no action is needed — your supply moves automatically and your direct debit stops at the closing bill. If you're on a keypad meter, you'll need a new keypad number from Power NI (UREGNI regulated tariff) on or after 31 May 2026: get it online, by email, by post or by phone (0800 011 3435, 24/7). Submitting a meter reading in the week before 31 May 2026 ensures both your closing bill and your opening bill are accurate.

No — your unit rate is set to fall. Power NI (UREGNI regulated tariff) runs the Utility Regulator (UREGNI) regulated tariff, which is reviewed quarterly and currently sits below Electric Ireland NI's final published rates. Most transferred households should see a small reduction in unit cost. Standing charges are broadly similar.

Yes. You can switch to any active NI residential electricity supplier (SSE Airtricity, Click Energy, Budget Energy, firmus energy on the Phoenix Gas footprint) up to the day before the transfer date. After that, your account will already be a Power NI (UREGNI regulated tariff) account and any further switch starts from there. There are no exit fees either way.

None. Electric Ireland NI has waived all exit and termination charges for the closure. Any credit balance on your closing bill is refunded to your nominated bank account within six weeks.

If you held a gas account with Electric Ireland NI on the Phoenix Gas network, that account is being closed alongside the electricity account. You need to pick a new gas supplier — firmus energy and SSE Airtricity Gas both supply the Phoenix Gas footprint — before 31 May 2026. Power NI (UREGNI regulated tariff) is electricity-only.

Call Electric Ireland NI first — the dedicated transfer team can fix most issues. If your complaint is still unresolved after 8 weeks, escalate free of charge to the Consumer Council Northern Ireland. The Utility Regulator (UREGNI) sets the rules but does not investigate individual disputes.
