Check who your water supplier is! If you’re unsure who your water supplier is, use a postcode checker or have a look at our comprehensive Water Supplier List.

Yorkshire Water Change of Address

Yorkshire Water change of address is what you will need to do if you’re an existing customer of Yorkshire Water and are moving to another address supplied by Yorkshire Water.

It’s a simple process and should take only a few minutes to complete the Yorkshire Water change of address form online.

To get started, you should have:

  1. Your current address
  2. Your new address
  3. The date you're moving

With that information at hand, you can complete the Yorkshire Water change of address form.

You will pay your Yorkshire Water bill as you pay now. So, if you pay by direct debit, you will continue with the same direct debit and Yorkshire Water will update the details so it matches the consumption of the new property.

For customers who would prefer to speak to the Yorkshire Water moving house team by phone, you can call 0345 124 2424. The call should take about fifteen minutes, including waiting on hold.

The Yorkshire Water moving house team is available from Monday to Friday, 8am-6pm and Saturday, 9am-5pm. They’re closed on Sundays and bank holidays.

You can also request a call back from the Yorkshire Water change of address team by visiting the call back request page and choosing the option New customer / moving home. You can choose a convenient day and time for the Yorkshire Water moving house team to call you back.

Yorkshire Water New Customer

signing an agreement

Customers who are moving to Yorkshire for the first time, and are going through the Yorkshire Water moving house process, will need to register as a Yorkshire Water new customer. The process is painless and takes a few minutes when done online. You will need to visit the Yorkshire Water New Customer registration page and follow the instructions.

Is Yorkshire Water a hard water area? The water supplied by Yorkshire Water is mostly soft or moderately hard. This is due to the fact that there is a lower concentration of minerals in the water meaning it is much softer than compared to other parts of England. If you want to find out more about hard and soft water, check out our Water Hardness guide.

To register Yorkshire Water new customer you will need to know:

  1. Your new address
  2. Your moving date
  3. Your contact phone number and email address
  4. Your bank account number, sort code and the name of the account holder if you want to pay for your Yorkshire Water bill by direct debit

You will first need to enter your postcode into the Yorkshire Water new customer registration form. Sometimes the system may not recognise your postcode. When this happens, you can enter your address manually. The Yorkshire Water moving house team may get in touch with you to verify the information later.

Know your rates! Water rates vary from region to region in the UK. If you want to understand how your water bill is calculated, check out our guide on UK Water Rates to find out more.

Next, it will ask you to specify how many people will live in your household and your move-in date. This date can be in the past or in the future if you haven’t yet moved in.

The next thing you are going to do is add the name of the account holder. You can add multiple people to the Yorkshire Water account, for example, your partner or other housemates if you share the house or flat.

Once you’ve added the names to the account, you will decide how you want to pay and you have two options:

  1. Monthly direct debit
  2. Receive your bill in the post

For monthly direct debit, you will need to have your bank account information ready and can decide which day of the month you prefer the direct debit to be taken.

Customers who choose to receive the bill in the post can make the payment upon receipt of the bill by:

  • Debit or credit card
  • Standing order
  • Online banking
  • Cash at Paypoints or The Post Office

Finally, you will see a confirmation screen with all the information you have entered. Double check that it’s correct and click the Submit details button to finish your Yorkshire Water new customer registration.

Find the right payment method for you Everyone’s finances are different so it’s important to find the best payment method that is both convenient and comfortable for you so you don’t get behind. Check out our How To Pay Your Water Bill guide to find out more.

Cancel Yorkshire Water

Customers who are moving to an address not supplied by Yorkshire Water will need to cancel Yorkshire Water and also register with the water company that supplies your new address.

To cancel Yorkshire Water if you are leaving the area, you will need to fill out the Yorkshire Water existing change of address form on the website. You will need:

  1. Your current address
  2. Your new address
  3. The date you're moving

Once you enter your new address that is not supplied by Yorkshire Water, the system will cancel Yorkshire Water.

You will receive a final bill shortly after your move for your consumption up to the date that you moved. Yorkshire Water will send any further correspondence to your new address if they get in touch with you. Make sure to take a water meter reading on the day you leave so you pay the right amount.

If you have any doubts about the move, you can of course contact the Yorkshire Water moving house team to change or update any details of your move.

Only the main account holder can cancel Yorkshire Water.

Cancel Yorkshire Water Because of a Bereavement

Customers who want to cancel Yorkshire Water because of a bereavement can do so by calling the Yorkshire Water bereavement team on 0345 1 24 24 24.

The Yorkshire Water bereavement team is available Monday to Friday, 8am-6pm and Saturday, 9am-5pm. They’re closed on Sundays and bank holidays.

Customers calling regarding a bereavement will need to have the following information to hand:

  • The account holder’s details including name, address and date of death
  • If the property is owned or rented
  • An up-to-date meter reading
  • The forwarding address to send any last correspondence to, if the account is being closed

If someone will still live in the house, Yorkshire Water will need to set up a new account for them and will need their full name, forwarding address and telephone number. This will allow them to set up the bill in their name.

In some circumstances, you may not have all the information requested above. You can still call the Yorkshire Water bereavement team as they can still help you cancel Yorkshire Water.

Congratulations! You’re off to Uni! Time to set up your Yorkshire Water student bills.

Before you get started, you will need to check your tenancy agreement to see if you need to pay a Yorkshire Water student bill.

Landlords will either pay the water bill and include it in your rent or they may prefer to keep the bill in their name and give you the bill each month.

Check your tenancy agreement or check with your landlord or letting agent to find out who should pay the water bill.

When your Yorkshire Water student bill isn’t part of your rent, you will need to register as a new customer with Yorkshire Water. The process is simple and can be entirely online. You can choose to pay by:

  • Direct debit
  • Online card payment
  • Bank transfer
  • Payment card at a PayPoint or Post Office with cash or debit/credit card

If you’re sharing your house or flat with other students, you can even add their names to the account so any of you can speak to Yorkshire Water about the student bills.

Yorkshire Water Moving House No Water

If you’ve just moved into a property, it could be the case that the water has been shut off. If this is the case, generally the Yorkshire Water moving house team will have informed you when you moved the property’s water account into your name.

However, if the Yorkshire Water moving house team didn’t inform you and the water has been shut off, there are still a few things to try:

  1. Locate where the stop tap is in your property. This is often near the water meter.
  2. Turn it anti-clockwise to release the flow of water.
  3. Try not to force it, it should turn easily.

For a full description of what to do if you have no water in your new property, check out our comprehensive guide on No Water in Home.

If you are renting the property from a landlord, you should get in contact with them first of all to find out whether they shut the water off while the property was empty.

Yorkshire Water Moving House Complaints

If you are having issues with your Yorkshire Water moving house experience, you can make a complaint to Yorkshire Water so they can get it resolved. Unfortunately, you can’t switch water supplier so you should be patient and let Yorkshire Water try and solve the issue as quickly as possible

If you still haven’t had your Yorkshire Water moving house issue solved within 8 weeks, you can escalate your complaint to the Consumer Council for Water (CCW). This is an official body that helps water customers with their issues against water suppliers.

If the CCW fails to help you, you can take your complaint further to the Water Redress Scheme (WATRS) that deals with long-term disputes. Don’t take your complaint to the water regulator Ofwat as they will not be able to help you. Ofwat only deals with anti-competitive behaviour in the water industry.
